Microsoft (MSFT -1.27%) has sold 60 million licenses so far for its Windows 8 operating system, the company announced in an official blog post yesterday following a presentation at the Consumer Electronics Show. That figure includes both upgrades and fresh sales to original equipment makers of new hardware. "This is a similar sales trajectory that we saw with Windows 7," said the company.

The company added that it is experiencing "a significant increase" in the number of Windows 8 certified systems since general availability at the end of October. It said there are currently more than 1,700 such systems for Windows 8 and Windows RT.

Windows 8 is the latest iteration of Microsoft's flagship operating system. It went on sale in October.

Microsoft reported in the same release that since the opening of the Windows Store, the number of apps has quadrupled and it passed the 100 million app download mark -- just two months after general availability.
