Defense contractor Northrop Grumman (NOC -0.02%) has been awarded a three-year $9.2 million contract by the U.S. Army to produce hand-held precision targeting devices (HHPTDs), a precise battlefield targeting system weighing less than 5.5 pounds.

The HHPTD and devices like it allow soldiers on the battlefield to send targeting data to command and airborne systems. To date, Northrop -Grumman has supplied more than 25,000 laser targeting systems for infantry and vehicles.

Northrop Grumman vice president of the laser systems business unit, Gordon Stewart, was quoted in a company press release as saying: "The HHPTD puts the targeting accuracy needed for today's precision GPS munitions in the hands of the warfighter."
