On Wednesday, the Department of Defense announced the award of two contracts worth a combined $29.6 million to aerospace and munitions supplier Alliant Techsystems (NYSE: ATK).

The first award, a $9.9 million firm-fixed-price contract, directs Alliant to support "solid rocket motor warm line smart transition efforts" related to the Boeing (BA -2.87%) LGM-30G Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile, the last-remaining land-based ICBM in the U.S. nuclear arsenal. According to the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. had 450 Minuteman IIIs in its arsenal as of July 2010. Work on this contract is to be completed by Sept. 30, 2014.

The second award, again a firm-fixed-price contract but for $19.7 million, modifies an existing contract and directs Alliant to supply an unspecified number of 120mm tank training rounds. Alliant, along with Olin Corp (OLN -0.92%) and General Dynamics (GD -3.97%), is one of the primary suppliers of ammunition to the U.S. military. Work on this contract is to be completed by March 31, 2014.
