Textron Confirms Afghan National Army Contract

U.S. defense contractor Textron (NYSE: TXT ) confirmed Thursday that it has received a $113.4 million Pentagon contract, discussed briefly earlier this week on the Defense Department's own website.

The contract, which pays for Textron to supply 135 new Mobile Strike Force Vehicles (MSFV) for the Afghan National Army (ANA), implies a per vehicle price of $840,000. Textron further clarified that, with this week's order, it has been contracted to supply Afghanistan with a total of 634 such vehicles to date, of which nearly half have already been delivered, and many are already in service with the ANA.

In the instant contract, Textron has been asked to build three MSFV variants:

a tank-like MSFV with enclosed turret;
an MSFV with Objective Gunner's Protection Kit
an MSFV ambulance

All Afghan MSFVs are based on the original M1117 Armored Security Vehicle in service with the U.S. Army, feature V-shaped hulls to minimize the effects of roadside bombs, and have been upgraded further to enhance their ability to survive improvised explosive device attacks.

Textron shares closed 0.5% lower in Thursday trading, ending at $29.66.
