Cisco Systems (CSCO 0.44%) intends to buy U.K. mobile connectivity company Ubiquisys for $310 million in cash and employee retention incentives, Cisco announced today.
Ubiquisys is a privately held company that provides "small-cell technologies" for "seamless connectivity across mobile heterogeneous networks for service providers" on 3G and LTE networks, according to Cisco, which said that the purchase of Ubiquisys would fit well with its recent aquisitions of BroadHop and Intucell, and further the company's development of service provider Wi-Fi and licensed radio.
The company said the small-cell technologies it will receive from Ubiquisys can be used to offer cost-effective ways to increase cellular data capacity on networks with limited spectrums. "Small cells deliver their signal over a shorter range, which allows mobile users to get a faster, more consistent voice and data experience," said Cisco.
Cisco also said the technology will be paired with the company's existing mobile portfolio to help service providers transition to next-generation radio access networks.
Ubiquisys will be integrated into Cisco's Small Cell Technlogy Group. The deal is expected to close by summer.
