For all his success, Robert Downey Jr., as Iron Man, has never proven to be as popular as either Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield, both of whom have played Spider-Man on the big screen. All that could change when Iron Man 3 debuts on May 3.

The film could follow in the footsteps of Marvel's The Avengers, and bring Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS  ) another billion-dollar box office, says Tim Beyers of Motley Fool Rule Breakers and Motley Fool Supernova in the following video.

Sony's (NYSE: SNE  ) best performance from a Spidey film came in 2007, when Sam Raimi's  Spider-Man 3 earned $90.9 million worldwide, according to data supplied by Box Office Mojo.

Do you agree that Iron Man 3 will top that total? Please watch, and then leave a comment to let us know what you think of Disney's plans to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I to believe "Iron Man 3" has a good shot at hitting 1 billion worldwide, in fact it's my pick to be 2013's biggest hit overall. It definantly won't reach "The Avengers" total, but it will do great numbers. I see 900 million worldwide at a minimum, and 1.1 billion at maximum. "The Hobbit 2" is probally the only other film i see with a realistic shot at reaching 1 billion globally, "Catching Fire" is more of a long shot. One thing i'm sure of is we won't see four 1 billion grossing films like 2012, that's for sure. When it's all said and done i look for "Iron Man 3" to also take in 375-425 million domestically, it will be an absolute monster at the box office this year, make no mistake about it.

Iron Man 3 will become a hit, one way or the other. With Disney backing it now, it surely will outgross it's predecessors. I'm predicting a soft billion, barely scratching it, when it finishes it's theatrical run, as it doesn't have the hype of Avengers. But ultimately it comes down to 3D and how many theaters show it in that format. IMAX is the preferred format for those who are aware of it and can and are willing to pay those premium price, but it's only counts for a quarter of the total grosses.

Gah! Thanks for catching the mistake. Box Office Mojo pegs the total at $890.9 million:
