Barnes & Noble (BKS) launched a new self-publishing tool for authors today, called Nook Press. The online platform allows authors to write, collaborate, and publish books for Nook customers to purchase.

The company said in a press release: "By removing the technology barrier from self-publishing and offering easy-to-use tools for writing, editing, and publishing e-books, Nook Press makes it even easier for authors to focus on writing and reaching new readers."

Nook Press will build on the current Nook self-publishing platform, called PubIt! The company said in the release that Nook Press is a free service that allows authors to sell their books to Nook customers within two to three days after submitting their work.

The new platform lets authors engage in live chat during weekday business hours with Nook customer service and includes visualized sales reports of the author's book. Authors can also upload their work and invite others to edit or post comments for feedback.

Writers who sell books through Nook Press will receive 65% of sales for books priced at or between $2.99 and $9.99. For books priced at $2.98 or less, or $10.00 or more, the author will receive 40% of the selling price. The company said all books prices are determined by the author but must be between $0.99 and $199.99.

The service is live today at www.nookpress.com.
