How America's Energy Advantage Relies on Natural Gas

America's Energy Advantage is an association of American manufacturers that are spearheading a push to keep it hard to export natural gas overseas. The group that includes Dow Chemical (NYSE: DOW  ) , Alcoa (NYSE: AA  ) , and Nucor Steel (NYSE: NUE  ) believes that the abundance of energy available to domestic companies from the shale boom should be kept at home to ensure that this advantage persists for years to come.

In the video below, Fool.com contributor Doug Ehrman discusses in more detail why these manufactures believe natural gas exports should be limited, what some of their less obvious motivations might be, and how this may affect the political landscape.

Materials industries are traditionally known for their high barriers to entry, and the aluminum industry is no exception. Controlling about 15% of global production in this highly consolidated industry, Alcoa is in prime position to take advantage of growth that some expect will lead to total industry revenue approaching $160 billion by 2017. Based on this prospect and several other company-specific factors, Alcoa is certainly worth a closer look.
