Will Microsoft and Google's Innovations Destroy Apple?

As the landscape of personal computing is changing, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) and Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL  ) are doing battle in both hardware and in the cloud. Each has recently offered an answer to replace the traditional laptop PC, and each has made a major push for more cloud-based solutions. In the meantime, we all seem to be waiting for the newest thing from Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  )  -- the iWatch, or the iPhone 5, or the iDon't Know What. It's time for Apple to get in the game.

In the video below, contributor Doug Ehrman discusses how these two behemoths are doing battle and why Apple is being left behind.

It's incredible to think just how much of our digital and technological lives are almost entirely shaped and molded by just a handful of companies. Yeah, Apple gave these answers three years earlier. Your definition of "behind" is not in line with any dictionary on earth.

You want to say that the ChromeBook (Pixel or not) is outselling anything Apple does? According to all available info, it is not even outselling the Apple TV. The Surface (RT or not) is flying off the shelves? Not remotely (flying off the shelves and right into the bargain bin maybe). Both are duds. Google or MS have as many paying cloud customers as iTunes has? Not even when examining any statistic on LSD.

Apple's next big move does not have to come now or yesterday, it has to come before anybody catches up. And by "catching up" I mean: making the same profits, not selling tons of junk under cost (which is not innovation, just sick). They all are years away from that.

Google's only profitable business, from day one, is online ads. MS's only profitable businesses (for almost three decades) are Windows on the desktop, Office and server software. None of their "innovations" after that have created a dime.

What innovations? Microsoft doesn't even make their own computers like Apple does, they just make an os, some apps and xbox... which Apple seems to have no interest of competing in gaming consoles.

Google has a decent phone os but I wouldn't say it's more innovative than iPhone as a whole, I think Android would be terrible on an iPhone... like putting Windows on a Mac. Their software just works best with their hardware. They compliment one another.

Apple definitely had a downturn after Steve Jobs died and this caused many investors to lose confidence in Apple's ability to carry on without him, but I think as Apple continues to do what it does and release high quality beautiful products then people will regain confidence in Apple and buy.

Microsoft and innovation don't belong together in a sentence. They are rip-off artists who have never created a thing.

microsoft hasn't had any good innovations lately. windows 8 is a disaster and there tablet is too overpriced...

Why would you buy a Windows 8 Pro tablet?

I have personally turned my Surface Pro into a hackintosh. Took Mountain Lion app store download (need a mac or vmware to get this), xnotes, clover, and using tomx86 site and osx86.

If Apple wants to catch up. They need a tablet that runs a full OS, MS should not have been first.

but what does apple makes? a very expensive pc with low to middle specs hardware with a nearly free Linux type os? get Linux for free like Ubuntu and pay the right price for a pc cuz that's what a mac is, a pc! it has the "same" hardware components than a pc. just different os :P

Come on. All 3 companies are excellent, with cash flow & balance sheets to prove it. All 3 have world class R&D and proven brands in various spaces.

Look, it would take a revolutionary innovation that can give a sustained advantage for any 1 of these companies to knock out any of the other 2. It's improbably. And whatever the long odds, it's at least as likely that Apple would do it as Google or Microsoft.

Right now, Apple is the best buy. It has more compelling value. Then Microsoft, which is at fair to slightly above fair valuation. Google is at a premium value, probably not a good buy for anybody but a real long.

Mind shouldn't go wrong with either 3. I own Microsoft & Apple. I am looking to get into Google when it becomes cheaper.

Wow a ton of Apple fanboys who are in denial that Apple is falling. Their most profitable product the iPhone is losing market share. Guess who it's losing it to? Phones that run Google's Andriod. Not a surprise that people are finally sick of overpriced pieces of crap that carry the Apple name. Apple is in the middle of the pack when it comes to specs. So what if it looks better on the outside. Everyone covers up their phones with cases and stuff anyways.
