Google (GOOGL 0.35%) has made waves with its tests of self-driving cars -- which some see as the future of transportation. Those are still a long way off, but automakers are getting closer and closer to that day.

General Motors (GM -0.05%) is one of those automakers. GM said this week that it is testing a new smart cruise control system that can actually drive your car for you under certain conditions.
