Volkswagen (VWAGY -0.47%) was the world's most profitable automaker last year, but it's far from satisfied. VW wants to be the world's largest-selling automaker by 2018, and it plans to push its profits up even higher along the way.

As part of that push, VW wants its luxury brand Audi to have a bigger piece of the American automotive pie, so this week it started construction on a massive new factory in Mexico.
