At a recent Major League Soccer match between the Los Angeles Galaxy and New York Red Bulls, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and the MLS unveiled a multiyear arrangement to improve the MLS experience for fans using new Windows 8 applications, the two sides announced.
The new MLS-specific apps, as part of its "world's smartest soccer league" initiative, will provide fans with in-stadium information and exclusive content. The Windows 8 apps will also allow soccer fans to customize their experience to focus on their favorite teams, including schedules, stats, substitutions, roster lineups, highlights, and play-by-play.
Kathy Carter, president of Soccer United Marketing, a division of MLS, said, "MLS supporters are young and active, and technology plays a central role in their lives." Carter added, "This exciting partnership is another step in the process of becoming the world's smartest soccer league."
Microsoft's general manager of Windows marketing, Kathleen Hall, commented, "As technology and sports continue to intersect, we look forward to continuing to provide innovative interactions for fans whether in the stadium or at home through Windows 8."
Financial terms of the arrangement were not disclosed, nor was the length of the partnership.
