Today, chipset maker Broadcom (NASDAQ: BRCM) introduced the first 5G WiFi chip that can be used in PCs, notebooks, tablets, and smartphones on the new 802.11ac wireless standard.
The company said 802.11ac wireless technology is becoming the new standard for retail and enterprise wireless routers. Broadcom expects its chip to allow lower-priced devices to use the new wireless standard without significantly increasing costs for original equipment manufacturers.
The company said in a press release that, "As the first company to deliver 802.11ac technology across all product segments, Broadcom is well positioned to capitalize on these opportunities by providing original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) an affordable solution that offers all of the performance, range and power advantages of 5G WiFi in a single-chip design."
Broadcom's current 5G WiFi chip can be found in the new Samsung Galaxy S4, and the HTC One smartphones. The company is currently sampling the new chip with some with some of its customers, and expects production to start in the second half of this year.
