Android's Next Big Bet? Phones Under $100

The following video is from The Motley Fool's weekly Tech Review, in which host Chris Hill talks all things tech with Fool analysts Eric Bleeker and Lyons George.

While still only a rumor, it seems that Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL  ) may be looking toward the release of a low-end Android phone, coming in under the $100 price point. In this segment, our analysts discuss why this would be an important move for Google that could sacrifice some profit for the sake of market share in emerging markets, and why the Android operating system itself would make it very challenging for Google to get much below the $100 mark.

Want to get in on the smartphone phenomenon? Truth be told, one company sits at the crossroads of smartphone technology as we know it. It's not Nokia, or Verizon, or even Apple. In fact, you've probably never even heard of it. But it stands to reap massive profits no matter who ultimately wins the smartphone war. Don't they offer tablets for under $100? I have a tablet that was probably around $50.

    No.

Android's next big bet is Android quad-core 7" tabs for under $100. I have one of these and it rocks. FullHD HDMI, SDHC, USB OTG, capacitive HD display, current Android with Google Play, the works. After that the HDTV Android stick.

PRC has discovered the disruptive nature of Android to take control of the tech scene and they're going to push it for all it's worth: Innovative homegrown processor technologies, subsidized shipping, cheaper than cost fabs, assembly and development. This is China's big shot at king of the tech hill and they're going to work it with the full weight and power of a sovereign nation.

Western companies need to get with the program or they're going to be former companies. By collapsing they're going to give pre-eminence in consumer tech and compute to China and surrender the US place as provider of tech to the world. That may not even be enough.

You can get these tabs for $40 in Shenzhen now. India is looking to buy a billion of them to give to students if they can get them assembled in-country. Remember when the big deal was a $100 laptop? That day came and went rather quickly.

If you're a US tech booster or company the situation is dire. If you're HP or Dell or Microsoft you've got your fingers in your ears yelling "lalala I can't hear you!" All the while Amazon and eBay move pallets of gear.
