To the surprise of many observers, the latest JD Power Initial Quality Survey ranked General Motors (GM -0.04%) way ahead of Ford (F 0.08%). In fact, GM was the industry's big winner, with eight "segment" awards and all of its brands in the top tier, while Ford plummeted in the standings.

How did this happen? Plenty of people feel that Ford's current product line is its best ever, while GM still has work to do.
