The Dawn of DuPont, and Other Economic Milestones

On this day in economic and business history...

The company popularly known as DuPont (NYSE: DD  ) is a shortened form of "E.I. du Pont de Nemours," itself a shortened version of the name Eluthere Irenee du Pont de Nemours, a Paris-born chemist with particular expertise as a gunpowder manufacturer. It was on July 19, 1802, on the banks of the Brandywine River in Delaware, that du Pont broke ground on the first gunpowder mills that gave rise to the DuPont chemical empire.

The du Pont family had arrived in Delaware at the turn of the 19th century after escaping the worst of the French Revolution. E.I. du Pont's father had been a minor noble and successful politician before the Reign of Terror, and his defense of doomed King Louis XVI from a besieging mob in 1792 nearly cost him his head in the guillotines. The elder du Pont later wound up playing an important role in the Louisiana Purchase by negotiating much of the deal on behalf of President Thomas Jefferson.

Family connections offered the chemist E.I. du Pont the chance to meet a former French army officer working with the U.S. military to procure better gunpowder. The officer convinced du Pont to go into the gunpowder business, as American-made gunpowder was inferior to European product. After a return to France in 1801 to raise capital and procure the proper manufacturing equipment, du Pont had everything he needed to get started.

The company was initially capitalized at a value of $36,000 -- roughly $780,000 today -- and it was initially structured as a partnership under du Pont's control. The mills produced du Pont's first product after two years of construction and development, and his superior know-how soon established him as a prime source of gunpowder in the United States. The War of 1812 provided a major sales boost, and by the time of du Pont's death in 1934, the company was one of the U.S. Army's primary gunpowder suppliers. This relationship continued through the Civil War, when DuPont supplied half the powder used by the Union Army.

DuPont's utter dominance of the exploding-stuff industries eventually led to an antitrust suit from the federal government, and the company was forced to divest much of its manufacturing operations in 1912. That didn't stop the company from continuing to grow -- two years later, DuPont began building a stake in General Motors (NYSE: GM  ) , originally valued at $50 million, that would grow into a $2.7 billion hoard by the time another antitrust suit forced the two companies apart. During its period of ownership, DuPont had significant influence over the automaker -- it's largely thanks to DuPont that cars took on more colorful hues in the 1920s. DuPont also joined the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) in the 1920s, at which point it was already making nearly $100 million in annual revenue.

DuPont had begun experimenting with non-exploding chemicals after its 1912 divestiture order, but the 1930s brought some of its greatest successes: it introduced neoprene to the public in 1931, and began producing nylon in 1935. DuPont also rejoined the Dow that year -- its first stay did not last long, but it has remained part of the Dow since 1935. DuPont's advances also proved essential to the Allied effort during World War II. Nylon was important in the production of many battlefield materials, but DuPont also helped build the facilities and reactors used in the Manhattan Project. After the war, DuPont developed a number of new synthetic materials, including Mylar, Dacron (polyester), Lycra (spandex), Kevlar, Corian, and Tyvek (the latter two are commonly used in housing construction).

Today, DuPont is the second-largest chemical company in the United States by revenue, and is one of the 10 largest chemical companies in the world. The company's $45.8 billion market cap on its 210th anniversary was a nearly 5.9 million percent gain over the real value of E.I. du Pont's first powder mills.

The old peaks
The Dow closed above 14,000 points for the first time on July 19, 2007. Its final close, 14,000.41, was right on the nose, and was boosted by solid earnings across a wide array of Dow components, including technology stalwarts and industrial manufacturers. However, all eyes remained on Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke, who'd recently warned that subprime mortgage losses might reach to $100 billion.

By the end of July, the Dow had fallen below 14,000 again, but it clawed its way back above that mark by early October. That would be the highest the Dow would reach for years, as the subprime-driven financial meltdown began to wreak havoc on investments of every kind. The Dow finally regained 14,000 points nearly six years later, in the winter of 2013. Time will tell whether it has left that level behind for good.

Seaborne luxury's simple beginnings
The first Cunard liner, a paddle-wheel steamship called the Britannia, arrived at Boston Harbor on July 19, 1840, after 14 days at sea on its first voyage across the Atlantic. Built for Samuel Cunard's British and North American Royal Mail Steam-Packet Company primarily as a mail carrier, it was the first of several sister steamships that would establish the only consistent line of service between Britain and the United States, leaving Cunard as one of the last shipping companies standing in a brutally competitive mid-19th-century environment. The company renamed itself, 14 years after Cunard's death, to the Cunard Steamship Company. At this time, the company began its transition to a more luxurious passenger-liner operator, and in 1881, Cunard launched the first such liner fully rigged with electric lighting.

At the turn of the century, Cunard took on greater prominence in the British consciousness, as German companies began to launch liners of ever larger record-breaking size. Cunard's answers to this blow to British egos were the Lusitania and Mauretania, the former of which some eagle-eyed history buffs will recognize as the ship that helped push the United States into World War I. Several years after the war, Cunard acquired its former competitor White Star, operator of the infamous Titanic, and, in the 1930s it began construction on the iconic Queen Elizabeth, the original QE.

The Cunard line was acquired by Carnival (NYSE: CCL  ) , which now operates Cunard as a traditional British-style luxury brand. Cunard presently operates three liners, the Queen Mary 2, the Queen Victoria, and the Queen Elizabeth, the latter of which was built beginning in 2007, and the former of which is the largest ocean-going cruise liner in the world.

Cunard's rise to prominence was aided by the development of modern ocean-liner construction, which was first put to use to build the SS Great Britain, launched from the Bristol docks exactly three years after the Britannia reached Boston, on July 19, 1843. It was the first iron-hulled, screw-propelled liner in the world, and it set the standards that have contributed to propelled-ship designs for over a century. Although the Great Britain required several major retrofits to fully take advantage of her innovative design in her first years of operation, the durable vessel remained mostly seaworthy (except for one grounding in 1846) until a fire rendered her little more than a floating storage hulk in 1886. Today, the restored Great Britain can be visited at the same Bristol dry docks that launched her, where she stands as a museum to naval history.

Black gold in the great white north
The first commercial discovery of oil in Alaska -- then only a territory -- took place on July 19, 1957. That day, the Richfield Oil Company struck success at over 11,000 feet deep in a part of what's now the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, an area just south of Anchorage. Their well soon began producing 900 barrels per day, and other wells soon came up with oil, too. Once the federal government caught wind of the discovery, Alaskan statehood took on a greater sense of urgency, and the Great White North became the 49th state two years later.

The discovery of the Prudhoe Bay oilfield the following decade turned Alaska into a natural-resource powerhouse. The state's importance to American energy interests proved so acute during the OPEC oil embargo of 1973, that President Richard Nixon authorized the construction of a Trans-Alaska Pipeline within months of the embargo's enactment. BP (NYSE: BP  ) , which now owns Richfield (Richfield became ARCO in 1966 ), also owns nearly half of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, which has successfully transported over 17 billion barrels of oil since it came online. All told, Alaska itself has earned over $160 billion in oil revenues since it became a state in 1959.

    Next up, more lost market share in seeds for bumbling Monsanto. The GMO Wheat scandal there is only going to send more and more farmers right to DuPont/Pioneer.

    Only a Monsanto shill can complain about DuPont!

    How ironic, that the chemical icon and most powerful and largest global chemical enterprise of the 20th century has fallen on such embarrassing hard times. Just this Wednesday, July 17, 2013, news broke that the activist investor Nelson Peltz has taken a not insignificant position in DuPont. That DuPont now is possibly in play, subject potentially to raiders and demands of aggressive large investors speaks volumes as to the declination and pervasive weakness of this floundering chemical and second-rate seeds conglomerate.

    DuPont Management's dissimulation and PR promises has carried it only so far...now for commercial reality. Stay tuned. ...funfun..

    One more thing, it has been obvious for some time to many readers of financial and investment sites that DuPont Management is under such extreme pressure that they send out masked PR operatives and self-avowed employees to libel and smear DuPont's chief competitor, Monsanto as well as independently-speaking investors and critics. Any corporation whose avowed employees and Managers and masked operatives have to resort to this kind of unprofessional, abusive conduct is one sick unethical organisation. Such is the DuPont of the 21st century...funfun..
