1 For-Profit College Making Waves in Division I Athletics

With most for-profit colleges making news related to bad student loans and their high dropout rates, another for-profit school is making waves for another reason. Phoenix-based Grand Canyon Education (NASDAQ: LOPE  ) joined the Western Athletic Conference on July 1 and is scheduled to compete at a Division I level in sports this coming year.

This development has raised concerns from a number of Pac-12 schools that have asked the NCAA to discuss whether for-profit colleges should be able to compete at this level. The NCAA is set to review and discuss those concerns during an August meeting, and investors should be watching to see if anything new develops in the coming weeks.

I think it is rather hypocritical for any Pac-12 school or for that matter any 1A University or College to pretend they exist for anything but profit. Any school that plays 1A football or basketball does it for the money. Any school that pays a football or basketball coach hundreds of thousands or even millions per year know they will earn that money back many times if they win. Any school that cheats by paying athlete's knows that if they can get away with it they will earn millions. Even if they get caught they will still earn millions. It certainly seems that the main goal of College's and Universities today is not education so much as it is to make money..
