Pump prices headed higher this week, according to an Energy Information Administration report (link opens a PDF) released today.
Retail regular gasoline prices clocked in at a national average of $3.608 per gallon for Sept. 2, $0.056 above last week's price tag. The Midwest saw a steep $0.109 spike in prices, while the Rocky Mountain region edged up a slight $0.004 per gallon.
Compared with a year ago, national average per-gallon prices are still $0.235 cheaper.

For the same period, average retail diesel prices increased even more. Diesel prices for Sept. 2 averaged $3.981 per gallon, $0.068 above last week's prices. Here, too, Midwest prices made the biggest gains ($0.083), while Rocky Mountain residents paid just $0.01 more per gallon.
Despite this week's gains, diesel prices are still $0.146 cheaper than they were 12 months ago.

At these latest prices, New England pays the prettiest penny for gasoline ($3.756) while the West Coast takes the costly cake for diesel ($4.128). On the other end, the Gulf Coast can guzzle gas for just $3.406 and diesel for $3.897 per gallon.
