Why can't network TV produce a decent app? In lacking one, the major broadcast networks are losing out on an opportunity to keep viewers more engaged with their content, Fool contributor Tim Beyers says in the following video.

Look at CBS (PARA -3.94%), which allows for streaming recent episodes of its popular shows in exchange for sitting through ads. The experience effectively duplicates the couch potato experience for users who, in using a smartphone or tablet to watch, have already expressed a desire for something different, Tim says.

And yet, the problems don't end there. While Time Warner's (TWX) CW network only offers streaming, CBS allows viewers to purchase episodes -- but only through an app store, which means handing revenue to the major device suppliers.

Will network TV fix this model, or should investors be looking elsewhere? Tim answers these questions in the video. Click below to watch now.
