Longtime AZZ (AZZ -0.17%) President and CEO David Dingus has died unexpectedly, the company announced in a press release. He passed away this past Sunday from complications related to pancreatic cancer.

Dingus' position at the company will be filled on an interim basis by Dana Perry, currently AZZ's senior vice president of finance and CFO. He will remain in the post until the board of directors appoints a long-term replacement.

Dingus had served as president and CEO since 2001. This past July, he informed the board of directors that he would retire from the company effective March 1.

In addition to being president and CEO, he was also a director of the company, beginning his time on the board in 1999. Before both of those jobs, he was the company's chief operating officer, taking up the position in 1998. Previously, Dingus was CEO of privately held Reedrill from 1989 to 1998.
