The Department of Defense awarded 16 separate defense contracts on Wednesday worth $255.4 million in total. General Dynamics (GD -0.29%) won three of them, all benefiting the U.S. Navy.
In the largest of the contracts, General Dynamics' National Steel and Shipbuilding Co subsidiary (NASSCO) was awarded a $12.1 million option exercise requiring it to perform engineering, planning, and management work on, and to provide labor and material needed for, fitting-out the landing platform dock USS Somerset (LPD 25) through December 2014.
General Dynamics' Electric Boat Corp subsidiary was awarded a $8.8 million contract modification to continue providing the Navy with a Nuclear Regional Maintenance Department to support operational nuclear submarines at the Naval Submarine Support Facility, Naval Submarine Base, in New London, Conn. Electric Boat will continue providing staff to operate the department, helping to prepare submarines for their return to the fleet. While this contract sounds small in size at present, the Pentagon noted that it contains the potential for "options" to be exercised after its official completion date arrives in March 2014. Should all possible options be exercised, the total value of this contract could approach $164 million.
Electric Boat was awarded a further contract modification worth $8 million to perform non-nuclear submarine repair work on Groton-based submarines under the New England Maintenance Manpower Initiative (NEMMI). Work on this contract will include additional tasks such as maintaining, modernizing, and repairing floating dry docks, support and service craft, and plant equipment assigned to the Naval Submarine Support Facility. This contract will run through December 2014.
