Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) Maps has made big gains against Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL ) on iOS lately, growing to 35 million users in September. Meanwhile, Google Maps users for both Android and iOS fell from 81 million last year to 59 million now.
In this video, Fool contributor Chris Neiger discusses how this is a big win for Apple even though it doesn't make any money from its Maps app. Chris argues that Apple's success with Maps shows the company's influence over its iOS users and its ability to use convenience as an advantage against the competition.
While Apple may not see monetary gains from this app, a successful Apple Maps means Google could lose mobile advertising revenue. Chris explains that Google serves up location-based ads at the bottom of its maps app, and the more that iOS users prefer Apple Maps, the more it hurts Google's ability to make money from its rival program.
