Should Apple Fear Samsung's Secret Foldable OLED Smartphone?

If you thought Samsung's (NASDAQOTH: SSNLF  ) curved Galaxy Round smartphone was cool, you're gonna love this.

According to South Korean news site ETNews, Samsung used CES 2014 to secretly showcase a new smartphone prototype to VIP attendees. The kicker? The new device apparently features a foldable touch-sensitive OLED display.

This naturally begs the question: Should the folks at Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) be terrified of Samsung's incredible new OLED technology?

Not necessarily, says the Fool's Steve Symington in the following video. In fact, while Samsung still says its foldable displays won't be commercially ready until 2015, Apple may be working on some of its own innovative OLED tech as we speak. To hear Steve's full take on how this affects Apple and where investors should look to benefit, please check out the video below.

Thanks for sharing that bit of industry "insider" info.

When my children ask about new shoes or more food...I say "WAIT!"....patience children...OLED will provide.

I wipe the tears from their hope-filled little eyes and I say, you can have one hamburger now from the dollar menu...or wait....and have 100 hamburgers (from the dollar menu). Please OLED, let me feed my children.

@ScottAtlanta, thanks for the laugh. :-)

@larryw101 You're welcome? Food for thought: I know you tend to quickly post similar comments on anything which even hints at concerns surrounding Apple, but if you stopped wasting your own time posting fruitless comments you'd know this isn't a bearish Apple article. I own shares of AAPL myself and know it's fully capable of innovating to compete.

@jdmeck, Food for thought: Market researcher DisplaySearch expects penetration of flexible OLEDs in smartphones to rise from 0.2% this year to 40% by 2018. May seem gimmicky now, but if Samsung and LG Display have their way it'll be commonplace in just a few years.

    Fool on,

    Steve (TMFSymington)
