Better Buy: 3D Systems vs. Universal Display

In today's match-up of The Motley Fool's Better-Buy Tournament, 3D Systems squares off against Universal Display in a battle to determine which stock is the better buy now. The 64-company tournament pits two Motley Fool analysts against each as they make the case for their stocks, with the winner determined by you, the readers.

Leading 3-D printer maker 3D Systems (NYSE: DDD  ) has so many things going for it, argues Motley Fool analyst Sara Hov. Exponential demand has far outpaced production. Unit sales tripled in 2013, and fourth-quarter 2013 backlog more than doubled year over year. To keep up with all this demand, 3D Systems is doubling down on its research and development investments. It's also partnering with several companies including Google, Hasbro, and Hershey, so there's a lot more innovation to come from this Best Buy!

Universal Display (NASDAQ: OLED  ) is bringing things to light, according to Motley Fool analyst Simon Erickson. The company's organic light emitting diodes ("OLED"s) shine brighter and consume less power than traditional technologies. A boatload of new opportunities are coming online in 2014 -- including LG's big-screen televisions, Samsung's smartphones and tablets, and a new class of wearable electronic devices. This spells big growth for the company's OLED material sales, which increased 115% last year and drove revenue and profits to record levels. As the world becomes increasingly mobile and power-conscious, look for OLED to continue to shine.

What is the game here with stock picking? I was hoping for some consistent opinion about stocks but it seems they are on the move here as much as they are on "anywhere." So I am new to Motley Fools subscription services. I see a pick on stock advisors, read an article saying the stock sucks, then play a game to pick the same stock against another and watch this scenario rewind and replay across multiple subscriptions over and over. The whole time, my e-mail is full of the next service I haven't bought yet and less and less on what I am paying for. Am I 2000$ a fool or is there something wonderful going to happen, like staying focused on the customers expectations?

I'm fascinated in the way that innovation, entrepreneurship, and ambition are able to change the world we live in. I joined the Motley Fool full-time in 2013 and work for the Rule Breakers publication.
