Why Ford Is Throwing a Party for the Mustang

Shortly after the original Mustang's debut in 1964, Ford got one of its new Mustangs up on to the Empire State Building's observation deck by taking it up the elevators in pieces. It's planning to repeat that feat with a 2015 Mustang this week. Photo credit: Ford Motor Company

Most automakers don't go out of their way to celebrate their cars' birthdays. But Ford  (NYSE: F  ) and its Mustang are a different story.

The original 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang was unveiled in New York on April 17, 1964 -- 50 years ago this week. To celebrate, Ford and its all-new 2015 Mustang are throwing a big party in the Big Apple, with events for enthusiasts and a presentation at the New York International Auto Show.

Fool contributor John Rosevear will be at Ford's event at the New York International Auto Show. In this video, he discusses rumors of a special anniversary model of the Mustang, and talks about the importance of the all-new Mustang to Ford's current global expansion plans.

A transcript of the video is below.

OPEC hates the new fuel-efficient Mustangs; it'll hate this development even more
Imagine a company that rents a very specific and valuable piece of machinery for $41,000... per hour (that's almost as much as the average American makes in a year!). And Warren Buffett is so confident in this company's can't-live-without-it business model, he just loaded up on 8.8 million shares. An exclusive, brand-new Motley Fool report reveals the company we're calling OPEC's worst nightmare. Just click HERE to uncover the name of this industry-leading stock... and join Buffett in his quest for a veritable LANDSLIDE of profits!

John Rosevear: Hey Fools, it's John Rosevear, senior auto analyst for fool.com. The New York International Auto Show starts next week, media days are next Wednesday and Thursday, and we're expecting the automakers to unveil several interesting new models. I'll be there with my Foolish colleague Rex Moore, we'll bring you a video report of the show's highlights at the end of each day, and we'll have a bunch of more in-depth reports for you over the next week or so after that.

One of the things that I'm sure we'll be talking about is the all-new 2015 Ford Mustang, because Thursday April 17 is not just your humble Fool's birthday, it's the 50th anniversary of the unveiling of the original Mustang in 1964. Ford of course unveiled the latest Mustang, the 2015, back in December, Rex and I were at Ford's event in New York City where they showed it for the first time, we spoke with a bunch of Ford folks including CEO Alan Mulally and we captured it all on video, you can see it on fool dot com.

But we know Ford is planning some big events around the Mustang for this coming week, including an event on Wednesday night for the media in the Empire State Building. In fact, they're going to have a new 2015 Mustang on display on one of the Empire State Building's observation decks, just as they did with the original Mustang, and they're going to get it up there the same way they got the original up there, piece by piece in the elevator.

And we think Ford might have a new special edition of the Mustang to reveal. Some spy shots have gone around showing what could be a special 50th anniversary edition of the all-new Mustang, with some special badges and big dark-finished alloy wheels and some retro design touches like some old-school grill trim around the chrome pony. Motor Trend has reported that the 50th Anniversary Mustang will all be GTs, so they'll have V8 engines, and as they put it the Anniversary Mustangs will come in any color you want as long as that color is white.

The Mustang of course has been a staple of Ford's U.S. lineup for 50 years, and with this new Mustang it is becoming a global model for the first time, it'll be offered in right hand drive and left hand drive versions in Europe and in China and in lots of other markets around the world, and while it's far from Ford's best selling or most profitable model it's still very important to the company as kind of an ambassador for the Ford brand, an image car, and I can tell you that Ford executives from Alan Mulally on down care an awful lot about it.

So we look forward to bringing you whatever Ford has in store for the Mustang's 50th birthday party in New York next week, we'll be there with our camera rolling. Thanks for watching.
