China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) reported recently that China produced a total of 1.18 billion mobile phones last year, a year-over-year increase of 4.3%.
Including computers, TVs, and integrated circuits, China notched sales value of 8.5 trillion RMB (or $1.3 trillion), a year-on-year increase of 12.6%, according to MIIT. Specifically, the country produced 350 million computers, 130 million TVs, and 82.3 billion integrated circuits, a year-on-year growth of 10.5%, 4.8%, and 14.4%, respectively.
Altogether, China manufactured over 50% of the world's mobile phones, computers, and TVs.
Currently, about 80% of urban residents own a computer. As of the end of 2012, China's mobile phone penetration rate reached 82.6%, nine percentage points higher than in 2011. China's 3G network added 104.4 million users -- the first time it's added more than 100 million people, according to MIIT. Mobile Internet penetration increased 5.1 percentage points to 74.5%. For comparison, overall Internet penetration stands at 42.1%, an increase of 3.8 percentage points over the previous year.
