If you are a small business owner, or you're self-employed, and you travel for work-related reasons, it could be a great idea to get a business credit card. There are some excellent business credit cards available, and even if you're self-employed without a formal business structure (like a freelancer), you can still qualify.

You might want to make this move even if you already have a solid personal travel credit card. Using a separate credit card for your business travel, office supplies, and other expenses related to your business activities can help you keep track of those expenses separately. Plus, business credit cards typically have perks designed specifically to provide value to business owners.

1. My go-to business travel card

I'm technically an independent contractor, so I have a business credit card that I use when I travel to conferences, buy office supplies, or make other business-related purchases. And the go-to business credit card in my wallet is the Capital One Spark 2X Miles.

The card has a $0 intro fee ($95 annually afterwards) but has some attractive perks. It earns 2 miles per $1 on most purchases, and 5 miles per $1 on hotel and rental car bookings through Capital One Travel. You'll get a credit to pay for a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck membership, and the card has no foreign transaction fees.

2. A great fit for frequent travelers

I've written several times about how the personal version of the Amex Platinum Card can easily justify its seemingly expensive $695 annual fee (see rates and fees) for those who use its benefits. In fact, it's my go-to card for my day-to-day spending and I get tremendous value from it. Well, the same can be said for the business version.

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express has some of the same benefits as the personal version. It offers the same fantastic airport lounge benefits, elite status at Hilton and Marriott, and a $200 annual airline incidental fee credit (terms apply, enrollment may be required).

However, it also offers some business-specific statement credits, such as up to $400 back annually on Dell purchases, $150 per year toward Adobe software subscriptions, $10 per month toward wireless phone service, and more. Terms apply. All these perks do come at a price, however, as it has a $695 annual fee (see rates and fees) just like its personal Amex Platinum Card counterpart.

3. A card with great rewards and perks

Last but not least, another top travel business credit card is the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card by Chase. The card's $95 annual fee isn't waived for the first year like it is with some competitors, but the card offers one of the largest sign-up bonuses you can find at this price point.

The Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card earns an excellent 3 points per $1 rate on travel, shipping, internet, cable, phone, and certain advertising purchases, up to $150,000 per year. Plus, you get 25% more redemption value if you use points towards travel through Chase's Travel portal. The card also has fantastic travel and purchase protections, including cellphone insurance if you pay your bill with it.
