Is your insurer one of them?

Shopping around for auto insurance quotes is important for drivers because many insurers charge more money to people they think aren't likely to compare prices. New insurance options may also have become available, or a driver's circumstances may have changed over time, so a different insurer may be less expensive.

While it's generally a good idea to compare insurance quotes regularly and consider switching if there's an opportunity to save, customers tend to be loyal to certain insurance companies. In fact, according to a recent J.D. Power study, these are the insurers that customers tend to stick with.

Americans are most loyal to these insurance companies

J.D. Power reports that the auto insurance companies Americans tend to be the most loyal to include:

  • USAA
  • Amica
  • The Hartford
  • Kemper
  • Nationwide/State Farm (this was a tie)

By contrast, Americans were the least loyal to:

  • National General
  • ACG
  • Progessive
  • SafeCo
  • Auto Owners

What inspires loyalty to insurers?

A number of factors could make drivers more loyal to a specific insurance company. Price is definitely one of them, as J.D. Power indicates auto insurance premiums are the main factor that impacts customers' insurance picks. But other elements, such as claims handling, customer service, and options for bundled coverage can also affect a policyholder's experience with an insurance company.

USAA, in particular, generally receives high marks for both cost and customer experience, although eligibility is very limited as policies are only open to members of the military, veterans, and their families.

Other insurers that inspire loyalty also tend to be highly rated in terms of the features consumers look for when shopping for insurance.

Should drivers be loyal to insurance companies?

Drivers have the right to change insurance companies, and it's relatively easy to get multiple insurance quotes quickly on the internet. Plus, most insurers make it simple to buy coverage online without having to work with an agent in person.

This doesn't mean drivers must switch insurers, especially if they are satisfied with their current carrier. The key, however, is that motorists should make sure their insurance company continues to earn their business. And that means not assuming their current insurer is still the right one.

It's a good idea for motorists to get quotes and shop around at least once per year shortly before their current policy expires. By comparing prices and insurance company ratings, drivers can check if they are still paying the best price for the comprehensive coverage they need.

Drivers who have been with their insurer for a long time may not be aware there are better options out there, and simply accepting the status quo could mean paying hundreds of dollars extra for coverage over time. So, while drivers may discover that staying with their current insurer makes the most sense for them, it's worth taking time to research the best car insurance companies to ensure their choice continues to earn loyalty every year.
