Warren Buffett has proven the key to investing is buy and hold, the problem is, how do you know you're not holding onto a loser? For many investors, the only information they get besides glancing at an earnings release is the stock price. Separating the good from the bad is difficult, but finding well-run companies at bargain-basement prices is a great way to accumulate a fortune over the long run.

With that in mind, at The Motley Fool we have another easy tool for you to see how your company is doing. We can use the aggregate intelligence of the 135,000-plus investors participating in Motley Fool CAPS to see what the community is thinking about a company today, and how they felt about it last quarter. A change in the community's approval (signified by four- and five-star ratings) or disapproval (one- and two-star ratings) could indicate that further research is in order.

Here is the CAPS community's aggregate feelings on Micron Technology (NYSE: MU), and some related companies, from today and last quarter.

I own a few shares of Micron, I still haven't decided which way it's going to swing. They've consistently lost money over the last 8 reporting periods, and the stock has had a pretty impressive range.

As they continue to improve on DRAM and NAND technology, one breakthrough could really help out. However, with their competition, AMD, Taiwan Semiconductor, it's just a race to see who can mass produce the most chips for the cheapest cost.

If you've bought RAM for your computer in the last few years, you've noticed that the chips and speeds have improved. You've probably also noticed that it's cheap now, dirt cheap. Where it used to be several hundred dollars, you can find decent RAM for less than a hundred.

Warming up or cooling off? I say, hold! lol :)

Oh, and I also wanted to throw in that they still have cash for operations, joint ventures, and still have a ways to go (in my foolish opinion) before they get into serious trouble.

Micron's competition is not AMD (or the spinout manufacturing operation, Globalfoundries) or Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC)...AMD produces logic chips, TSMC produces logic chips also. Micron makes DRAM and NAND memory. Their competition is Samsung, Toshiba/Sandisk, Elpida, Hynix, and a couple of smaller, barely solvent, players in Taiwan. Micron and Samsung are the only two with decent technology, decent cash flow, and most importantly a strong balance sheet.
