$499 Microsoft Surface Model Sells Out

Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT  ) first foray into the tablet market appears to be off to a good start, as the first batch of $499 Surface tablets seems to have already sold out. The Microsoft website was offering three different models of the tablet -- priced at $499, $599, and $699 -- for delivery by Oct 26. Now, only the two higher-priced models are available for delivery on that date, indicating that the $499 device has been sold out. The most affordable device is still available for order shipment "within three weeks."

Microsoft rival Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL  ) continues to heat up the competition in the tablet market, and is widely expected to showcase its brand-new iPad Mini on Oct. 23.

The Surface is available in 32GB and 64GB models, and first went on sale at noon on Tuesday. The company said on Tuesday that the product would only be initially released in a "special limited quantity."

That's not a good sign. If they are releasing only a limited amount and they haven't sold out of all models within 24 hours, either nobody wants them or they made too many. Or both.

Apple iPads typically sell out as fast as they go on sale and it takes them a while to catch up to demand and they make millions of them upon first release.

It's quite disappointing that the Surface comes with USB 2.0 connectivity. Only 1 available USB port is also a showstopper. My MacBook Air has both USB 3.0 (two) and Thunderbolt ports. I regularly use both a 64GB USB thumb drive (to give my Air more storage) and a portable USB hard drive with my laptop. Microsoft's lack here makes is useless for my needs . . .

Limited quantity! Looks like they are using the first time buyers as guina pigs & then they will fix the bugs reported & release a new one:)

Are you really comparing a tablet to a laptop? That's apples to oranges. If you compare it to anything it has to be an iPad.

So let's look at the iPad. The device with no expandable storage (Surface does) and not USB ports (Surface does). That's how you do an apples to apples comparison.

This thing is going to be yet another Microsoft paperweight. Just like the Kin and the Zune.
