A Revolution Is Brewing in Energy

Renewable energy from wind and solar is now competitive with the grid, opening up a trillion-dollar market for investors. Leases from SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) or SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  )  with $0 down make solar power affordable and economical for homeowners. When added to Tesla Motors' (NASDAQ: TSLA  ) energy storage made at its gigafactory, the possibilities for disrupting the grid improve tremendously.

Then there are massive power projects from First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) , which are being passed down to new YieldCos like NRG Yield (NYSE: NYLD  ) .

Motley Fool solar analyst Travis Hoium covers why this space is so exciting for investors and how they can play this billion-dollar opportunity.

I would not touch renewable with a ten foot pole. It is not that I do not believe in renewable but because renewable is the new big buzz. Your paying a buzz tax. Look at the internet bubble as a good example of the premium you had to pay if you wanted a slice of a internet/telcom/equipment maker.

If you think you know a winner you can buy and live with the facts that there will be bigger ups and downs, but after ten years you have your winner picked. Else you ride of these companies and just make sure you get out before it tanks. This is really hard as no one can predict these things. Kudos to those who held on to Apple and Amazon all the way through. 100 other companies you wold have lost your shirt if you held.

For me personally the industry is just too risky as probably 80% of the current players are going to probably bomb. With such instability due to innovation it is hard to predict the winner.

Example is all electric verses fuel cell. Both are being priced to win. There may be only one winner. Conversely neither may win and some break through occurs that stands everything on its head. What happens if the Gigafactory by Tesla gets built and someone figures out how to engineer a glucose battery? What if Toyota arranges for massive fuel cell capacity and ICE continues because someone figured out how to easily make oil from algae?

You just have to be faster in the tech field and ask not only does a company have moat but how long will the moat last?
