75,000 bonus points

  • The enormous welcome bonus (worth over $900), bonus points for travel and dining, and $50 annual hotel credit alone make this card well worth the $95 annual fee. What really stands out are the rare travel protections such as trip delay reimbursement, lost luggage reimbursement, and trip cancellation/interruption insurance. It’s one of the only low annual fee cards we’ve seen offer those protections. Read Full Review

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a popular choice as a first travel card. Many travel cards, including its "big brother," cost hundreds of dollars every year. This Chase card has a $95 annual fee.

It probably won't end up costing you that much, though. You can earn up to $50 in statement credits every account year for hotel stays you book through Chase Travel. If you use that, then it brings the cost of the card down to just $45.

When you redeem points for travel through the Chase Ultimate Rewards program, you get a value of $0.0125 per point. Your 75,000 bonus points are worth over $900 in travel. You can also transfer your points to any of Chase's airline or hotel partners. That's what I do, because it's possible to get even more value this way -- I usually get $0.03 per point or more.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is all about the premium travel benefits. The annual fee is a whopping $550, but once again, you can get a good portion of your money back. You can receive up to $300 in statement credits every account year toward travel purchases. It's an easy credit to use, and if you do, the cost of the card comes down to $250.

This Chase credit card has a long list of features. Instead of going over every last one, I'll give you a few of the highlights:

  • Airport lounge access: After you enroll in your complimentary Priority Pass membership, you'll have unlimited access to its network of over 1,400 airport lounges. You can also bring up to two guests with you.
  • Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS fee credit: Your Chase Sapphire Reserve® will cover your membership fee to any of these programs, with a statement credit of up to $100 every four years.
  • Partner benefits: These include a complimentary one-year Instacart+ membership (must activate by July 31, 2024, membership auto-renews), a complimentary DoorDash DashPass membership for at least 12 months (must activate by Dec. 31, 2024, membership auto-renews), and $5 in monthly DoorDash credits through December 2024.

Points are worth even more toward travel with the Chase Sapphire Reserve®. When you book travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards, you get a value of $0.015 per point. Your 75,000 bonus points are worth $1,125 in travel with this card. You also have the option of transferring them to Chase's airline or hotel partners.
