Boring Portfolio Report

Boring)
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (August 12, 1997) -- Fifteen years ago today, the Dow Jones Industrial Average bottomed out at 777 after losing 25% in the preceding 14 months. Since Aug. 12, 1982, the Dow had gone on to increase more than ten-fold in nominal terms.
That impressive run got no respect today, however, as U.S. stocks celebrated the Birth of the Bull by selling off to the tune of just over 100 points on the Dow (-1.26%) and 10 points each on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq (-1.12% and -0.66%, respectively).
The Boring Portfolio went along for the ride, shedding 0.91%. Six of nine holdings lost ground.
Concerns over inflation (inflation??) apparently loomed large ahead of the July producer prices report on Wednesday morning and consumer prices report on Thursday. The yield on the benchmark 30-year bond rose to 6.67%.
There is precious little news to report on Boring stocks today. None, actually.
TIDEWATER (NYSE: TDW) managed to buck the tide to rise $7/8. OXFORD HEALTH PLANS (Nasdaq: OXHP) was the only other Borefolio winner, up $1/4. ATLAS AIR (Nasdaq: ATLS) held steady at an altitude of $27.
Everything else hit the skids, although none of the losses were particularly worrisome.
Indeed, "worrisome" is not at all the prevailing mood in the land of Boring stocks, because one thing this August retracement has accomplished is to provide a good opportunity to pick up a stock or two at an attractive price. We're nearing the conclusion of our due diligence on a number of prospective investments and expect to add at least one new stock to the fold very soon.
