Fool Portfolio Report
Wednesday, November 29, 1995

America Online splits and soars, Gap wilts, and we announce a sell. A big day for Foolishness.

All this ended up putting the FOOL well up over the market today, as you can see at bottom. The Fool Portfolio, in its pursuit of a 100% total return by the end of this year, closed up 92.74% historically, a new all-time high. The Portfolio was led by America Online, which zoomed $2 5/16 following its 2-for-1 split to settle at a bid of $39 3/4. This move combined with strong rebounds in both semiconductor holdings, with Applied Materials up $1 7/8 following a good earnings report yesterday (detailed in yesterday's recap), and KLA Instruments up $1 1/4.

To close out mentions of our winners, two Dow stocks provided further steam today, as GE rose $1/2 and Sears rose $7/8. Sears moved on positive analyst comments depicting a holiday retail season featuring gains for Sears of 5%-6%. Reports from the Thanksgiving weekend just concluded produced surprisingly weak retail numbers, suggesting a less than exciting Christmas. This runs contrary to Wall Street's former expectations, and sent our Gap stock off $2 3/8. But Sears, which is perceived as a "value" retailer (as opposed to a "premium" retailer), is projected to have MUCH better numbers than most, and hence the close over $40. Gotta love it.

That's the reason for the large disparity in our two retailers today.

The biggest news for tomorrow is that we're selling our RIDE stock. A great winner for us, we'll dearly miss RIDE, but we feel that it's reached a pretty full valuation and think we can find better places to put the money. That's the way we aim to manage this portfolio. . . when we see something else we like better, we move the money there. Thus, you can expect more trades coming up in the next couple of weeks.

To read full details on our RIDE sell, check either (a) our main-screen listbox, where the writeup is posted for tonight, (b) the top of the Hall of Portfolios listbox, or (c) the Ride section of our Hall of Portfolios listbox.

We don't know yet whether we'll trade out at market open or later in the day, but we DEFINITELY won't forget this time (thinking of Sonic)!

See you tomorrow, and Fool on!
