Capital One Savor Review: Is 3% Cash Back on Dining and Entertainment Worth the Hype?

Review Updated
Joel O'Leary
Many or all of the products here are from our partners that compensate us. It’s how we make money. But our editorial integrity ensures that our product ratings are not influenced by compensation.

My wife is a total foodie. Before we had kids, we'd hit up all the trendy new restaurants and pop-up food trucks across Los Angeles.

But these days we cook at home a lot more. Our weekends are filled with Costco runs, meal prepping, and trying to keep a toddler from putting his blueberries in the dog bowl.

Our grocery bill is now crossing the $1,200 per month mark -- a huge chunk of our monthly budget. So it's important that we capture the best credit card rewards.

That's why we love the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card (see rates and fees). It earns an unlimited 3% cash back on dining, entertainment, popular streaming services and at grocery stores (excluding superstores like Walmart® and Target®) -- which covers just about everything in our current phase of life.

What I like about the Capital One Savor card

I've tested plenty of great credit cards for groceries and dining, but the Capital One Savor card brings a unique combo of high rewards and lifestyle-friendly perks. Here are the top ones:

For me, this is the main draw. Most simple cash back cards only offer 1%-2% back in these categories, but the Capital One Savor card gives you an unlimited 3% cash back on dining, entertainment, popular streaming services and at grocery stores (excluding superstores like Walmart® and Target®).

If you spend $1,500 per month on these categories like my household does, that's $540 per year in rewards.

Just be careful if you do your grocery shopping at Walmart or Target. These aren't included in the grocery category!

A high 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel

You'll earn 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. This is a nice boost if you don't mind using their portal to book your trips. I've certainly never had any problems with it.

A solid welcome bonus

This one's pretty easy to earn for most people. You can earn a one-time $200 Cash Back bonus once you spend $500 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening.

A 0% intro APR

The Capital One Savor card offers a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months, giving you some breathing room to pay off existing debt or big expenses. The go-to 19.24% - 29.24% (Variable) APR applies when the intro period ends.

Just be aware, balance transfers come with a fee of 3% for the first 15 months; 4% at a promotional APR that Capital One may offer you at any other time after, which is more than fair among balance transfer cards. If you're transferring existing debt, factor that into your payoff plan.

$0 annual fee

Gotta love a card with a $0 annual fee (see rates and fees). You don't have to stress about "getting your money's worth" each year. Once you apply and own the card, every reward you earn is pure upside.

Credit card comparison

We recommend comparing options to ensure the card you're selecting is the best fit for you. To make your search easier, here's a short list of standout credit cards.

Downsides you should know about

While the Capital One Savor card has a lot going for it, there's at least one significant trade-off to keep in mind before you apply.

Low cash back on flights

While you do earn 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, flights only earn 1% because they fall outside of the featured categories. If you fly often, a dedicated travel rewards card might offer better value for airfare.

How to apply for the Capital One Savor card

Here is the direct link to apply on Capital One's website. The process usually takes less than 10 minutes.

Capital One uses soft credit checks for pre-approval, so you can see your chances of approval without dinging your credit.

Just make sure your credit score is in good shape (ideally 670+). Approval odds go way up if you've got a solid payment history and steady income.

Final thoughts

For my family, a card like the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card just fits. It's a perfect all-rounder with great unlimited cash back categories.

It's not the perfect card for everyone, especially if you book a lot of flights or want premium travel perks. But if you spend a decent chunk on food, fun, and everyday essentials, the Capital One Savor makes it super easy to turn your lifestyle into cash rewards.

With no annual fee (see rates and fees) and an easy-to-earn welcome bonus, it's a low-risk move to try out this awesome card.
