Many or all of the products here are from our partners that compensate us. It’s how we make money. But our editorial integrity ensures that our product ratings are not influenced by compensation. Citi is an advertising partner of Motley Fool Money.

The State Farm Good Neighbor Visa® Card is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, it offers a 0% promotional period for both purchases and balance transfers that lasts for 18 billing cycles. On the other hand, it provides cardholders with no option to earn a welcome bonus or rewards points. Read our full State Farm Good Neighbor Visa® Card review to decide if this is a card that fits your needs.

Full State Farm Good Neighbor Visa® Card review

This credit card is a good fit for: Consumers who want to consolidate debt using a 0% promotional rate, but don't care about accumulating rewards points.

Top perks

The State Farm Good Neighbor Visa® Card has some attractive features, particularly when it comes to unique perks.

0% introductory APR

If you're looking for a way to consolidate high-interest debt into a single debt with a 0% interest rate, the Good Neighbor Visa® Card is worth a closer look. The trick is to make sure that you have the card paid off in full before the promotional period of 18 billing cycles expires. Once it does, the APR will shoot up to the standard interest rate.

No annual fee

Depending on the credit card, annual fees can reach hundreds of dollars a year. The State Farm Good Neighbor Visa® Card charges no such fee.

Sweet perks

While the Good Neighbor card does not offer a welcome bonus or rewards points, it does provide a short menu of valuable perks. For example, eligible cardholders are reimbursed for up to $600 if their phone is stolen, and receive up to $200 of their auto policy deductible if they experience a covered loss. It also comes with extended warranty protection and travel and emergency assistance.

Low balance transfer fee

Every credit card with a 0% promotional rate on balance transfers charges something for the service. The Good Neighbor card charges 3% of the transferred amount or $5, whichever is greater. A lot of balance transfer cards available today charge a fee of 5%, so you'll likely pay less to transfer a balance with this card.

Alternatives to consider

There is no perfect credit card, so if you decide the State Farm Good Neighbor Visa® Card is not quite what you're looking for, other card options are available. For example:

  • A great choice for customers who are looking for a high standard rewards rate: The Citi Double Cash® Card provides cardholders with a flat rate of 2% on all purchases. So instead of trying to remember how much they'll earn for dining out as opposed to purchasing an airline ticket, cardholders are always sure of how much they'll receive. 1% of the reward rate is applied when you make a purchase using the card, and the other 1% is applied when the bill is paid.
  • For people who want unlimited cash back: The Chase Freedom Unlimited® card provides a steady stream of 1.5% cash back rewards. And if you're looking to pile up rewards cash, you'll have bonus rewards categories available, each one even more lucrative.

If neither of these sounds like a good fit, check out some of our other credit card reviews.

What could be improved

The State Farm Good Neighbor Visa® Card is sort of like a so-so date. It's not bad (at all), but all the pieces aren't quite there. Here's where the card could improve.

No welcome bonus

Because all credit card companies would be lucky to have consumers with good to excellent credit scores apply for their cards, one would think that the Good Neighbor card would sweeten the pot by offering a welcome bonus of some kind.

No rewards

Another place the Good Neighbor card falls short is rewards. When it's time to pay, most of us pull out the card with the most attractive rewards program. It seems that the State Farm Good Neighbor Visa® Card is missing out on becoming a "go-to" method of payment.

Suggested credit score

We'd suggest having a FICO® Score of 670 or better before applying for the State Farm Good Neighbor Visa® Card. In addition, the card company will consider several other factors, such as employment, income, and how much additional debt you carry.

The State Farm Good Neighbor Visa® Card is right for you if:

You're looking for a card with a 0% promotion rate that lasts 18 billing cycles, and you also want a card that offers less-common cardholder perks.

Our credit card methodology

At Motley Fool Money, we rate credit cards on a five-star scale (1 = poor, 5 = best). Our rating criteria includes rewards rates, welcome bonuses, fees, and perks like travel credits and 0% intro APR offers to evaluate our ratings.

We combine these factors with an evaluation of brand reputation and customer satisfaction to ensure you're getting the best card recommendations. Learn more about how Motley Fool Money rates credit cards.

FAQs

  • While credit scores are imperfect, they are one of the only ways a creditor can determine how well you've managed credit in the past. A creditor that works primarily with highly-qualified borrowers can continue to offer bigger perks, and this card does provide some unusual perks.

  • If you make it a practice to pay your balance off in full each month, you avoid paying interest. And yet, you continue to rack up rewards, meaning the card pays you to use it.

  • The bank gives you 18 billing cycles to pay the debt off in full before the APR shoots back up to its standard rate.
