If you're on a Galaxy Fold, consider unfolding your phone or viewing it in full screen to best optimize your experience.
Manufacturer's warranties protect you if there's a problem with something you bought. These warranties don't last forever, but you can lengthen them with many of the best credit cards. For example, Amex extended warranty protection* will get you an extra year on eligible warranties -- as long as you pay with the right American Express card.
To take full advantage of American Express extended warranty coverage, you need to know how it works. In this guide, you'll learn what is and isn't covered, and which American Express credit cards have this valuable feature.
American Express extended warranty coverage adds one year to the original manufacturer's warranty. For example, let's say you use your Amex card to buy a new television with an 18-month warranty. If it broke down after 20 months, you'd be able to claim the cost of the repair or replacement with American Express.
The extended warranty offers the same protections as the original warranty and applies to products with warranties of five years or less. It starts when the original warranty ends. If there's a purchase service contract in place at that time, then the extended warranty starts after the end of that contract. Note the extended warranty won't apply if either the original warranty or a purchase service contract lasts longer than five years.
For this benefit to apply, you must pay for the purchase with your American Express card or American Express rewards points.
Eligible purchases with an original manufacturer's warranty are covered by Amex extended warranty protection. You can file a claim if there's a problem with the item due to a covered event during the extended warranty period. If the claim's approved, the American Express extended warranty will pay for the appropriate repair or replacement service.
The coverage limit is either the cost of the original purchase or your card's extended warranty limit, whichever is less. Every American Express card has the following extended warranty maximums:
The Amex extended warranty won't cover several types of purchases such as secondhand items, artwork, or living creatures.
These include, but are not limited to:
There are also certain circumstances when your extended warranty coverage won't work. Here are some common examples:
More information on what the Amex extended warranty does and doesn't cover is available in each card's guide to benefits.
These are the current consumer American Express cards that offer extended warranty protection:
Terms apply.
All these cards provide the same Amex extended warranty coverage. Outside of that, the perks and annual fee amounts vary quite a bit from card to card. If you're trying to find the right fit, it's worth using a tool to compare credit cards and see which will work best for you.
Don't you wish you could take a peek inside a credit card expert's wallet sometimes? Just to see the cards they carry? Well, you can't look in anybody's wallet, but you can check out our experts' favorite credit cards. Get started here:
Go to the Amex extended warranty claims webpage to file online. After logging in, click "File a Claim." Go through the online claim process and provide the required information. If you'd like to file your extended warranty claim over the phone, call 1-800-228-6855.
Claims should be filed within 30 days (or as soon as reasonably possible). You can claim for any event covered by the original warranty, such as the item breaking down. Depending on the circumstances, American Express may send claim forms for you to complete and send back. If you haven't received any forms within 15 days of filing, write to American Express with information about your claim.
American Express also requires that you send proof within 60 days or as soon as reasonably possible. The proof of loss it requests will depend on your claim. Examples include:
When American Express has received satisfactory proof and determined the claim is payable, it pays benefit claims within 30 days.
Extended warranty service usually isn't the first thing people look at when evaluating rewards credit cards. It is, however, a valuable extra. Sometimes an extra year of warranty coverage can save you an expensive repair bill. If you have an Amex card with this perk, make sure to use it when paying for eligible purchases.
If you don't have an Amex card with extended warranty protection -- here are a few of our favorites.
