But this card also has quarterly bonus categories. When they are activated, cardmembers can earn additional cash back on select spending categories that rotate each quarter. And since the categories change quarterly, there are always new ways to earn extra cash back.

Chase recently announced the Q3 bonus categories that can be activated -- and gas spending is included. With gas prices on the rise, this is a big win for cardholders.

Activate the Q3 bonus to earn cash back

You'll need to activate the Q3 bonus categories to earn cash back if you're a Chase Freedom Flex℠ cardholder. You can activate them through the Chase Bonus site, the Chase website, or the Chase mobile app.

Cardholders must activate the bonus by September 14, 2022. You won't earn these extra rewards if you don't activate the bonus categories. Once activated, you can earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in the following categories:

• Gas stations
• Car rental agencies
• Movie theaters
• Select live entertainment

You can earn cash back in these categories on purchases made from July 1, 2022, through September 30, 2022.

Chase Freedom cardholders can earn bonus cash back, too

If you currently have a Chase Freedom card in your wallet, you can also activate the Q3 bonus categories and earn cash back. While the card is no longer available to new applicants, some consumers have and continue to use this card.

Don't ignore rewards credit cards

If you're not a Chase Freedom or Chase Freedom Flex℠ cardholder, there are other card options to explore.
