There are two Amazon-branded Visa Signature credit cards. One is designed for Amazon Prime members and another is designed for Amazon shoppers who don’t want or need a Prime membership. The Prime-focused Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature credit card is the clear choice for Amazon Prime members. If you're not a Prime member, here’s a closer look at the non-Prime Amazon Rewards Visa Signature credit card.

Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card
Our Bottom Line

The premium rewards and no annual fee make this a compelling offer for Amazon shoppers. If you have a Prime membership, the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card is the clear winner.

What I like

There are quite a few perks cardholders of the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature card enjoy:

  • First and foremost, the earnings rate is excellent on Amazon and Whole Foods purchases. Cardholders get 3% back on these purchases, and there’s no cap on your earnings. There are also several categories that have a 2% rewards rate, and I’ll get into those later on.
  • New applicants get a $50 Amazon gift card after their account gets approved.
  • There are no foreign transaction fees, so this can be a great credit card to take when travelling internationally.
  • The card has several other travel-related perks, such as emergency assistance, lost luggage reimbursement, baggage delay insurance, and travel accident insurance.
  • The Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card has several consumer-protection benefits, such as roadside dispatch, auto rental insurance, purchase protection, and extended warranty benefits.
  • The Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card offers Visa Signature benefits, which include a concierge service and participation in hotel benefits through the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection.

Why you can trust me

I’m a Certified Financial Planner® with extensive experience giving personal finance advice. I’ve written more than 4,000 articles on personal finance and investing strategies, and have been featured on some of the most prominent news outlets in the world. What’s more, in this case, I’m very familiar with the Amazon credit cards, as I’m a customer as well!

What could be improved

There’s no such thing as a perfect credit card, and the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card is not an exception. Here are some of the potential drawbacks and shortcomings consumers should be aware of before applying for the card.

  • Rewards can be used on Amazon.com purchases. If you want a cash-back option, you’ll need to look at alternatives.
  • There’s no 0% APR period for either purchases or balance transfers. If you plan to use the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card for a large purchase or otherwise carry a balance, the interest could get expensive. If this is the case, you may want to select one of the top 0% APR credit cards instead.
  • The Prime version of the card (which I’ll discuss in a bit) has a much better rewards rate. Even if you’re not a Prime member, if you’re a big Amazon spender, it could be worth becoming a member just to get the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature card.

Amazon Rewards Visa Signature cash-back categories

I briefly mentioned it earlier, but the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card has a three-tiered rewards structure. Different categories of purchases have rewards rates of either 3%, 2%, or 1%. Specifically, the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card earns rewards at the following rates:

  • 3% back at Amazon.com and at Whole Foods Market, with no limits to the amount of rewards you can earn.
  • 2% back at restaurants, gas stations, and drugstores.
  • 1% back on all other purchases made on the card.

Who should get this card?

  • People who pay their credit card bills in full every month, since there is no 0% APR period.
  • Non-Prime Amazon shoppers who aren’t “high spenders” (more on what that means in the next section).
  • Whole Foods customers who don’t have Amazon Prime.

Amazon Rewards Visa Signature vs. Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature

It’s important to note that there are two versions of Amazon-branded Visa Signature cards. There’s the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card, which is intended for consumers who are not Amazon Prime members, and the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card for those who are.

There are only a couple of differences worth mentioning. First, the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card earns rewards at a high rate on Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market purchases.

Second, new applicants get a bigger gift card upon account approval with the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card.

If you are already an Amazon Prime member, it’s a no-brainer. If you aren’t yet an Amazon Prime member, the difference in credit card rewards alone could justify the cost of membership.

How to apply

The Amazon Rewards Visa Signature card is issued by Chase, so you’ll need to apply through Chase’s website. The application itself shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes or so, and you’ll need to give basic personal information such as your Social Security Number, as well as information about your income. Neither Chase nor Amazon provide a specific credit score cutoff, but this is an unsecured credit card with a strong rewards program, so it’s reasonable to say that you should have at least “good” credit -- a FICO® score in the upper 600s or better -- to have a good shot at approval.

How this card stacks up to other cash-back cards

I mentioned that one of the downsides to the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card is that it earns rewards in the form of credit towards Amazon purchases, not cash back.

While there are no other credit cards on the market (at least, not yet) that offer a 3% everyday rewards rate on Amazon purchases, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some traditional cash-back credit cards that could be a better fit for your situation. Here are a couple of examples:

Is it right for you?

For most frequent Amazon shoppers, the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card is the better option. And in full disclosure, that’s the card that I have. However, if you’re a non-frequent Amazon shopper and want to maximize the rewards you get when you shop on the site, the non-annual-fee Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card could be a smart move.
