Best No Annual Fee Cards: Get the Perks Without the Price

Review Updated
Ryan Wilcox
Many or all of the products here are from our partners that compensate us. It’s how we make money. But our editorial integrity ensures that our product ratings are not influenced by compensation.

You don't need to pay a yearly fee to get serious value from a credit card. I've been writing about credit cards for years, and I still (for the most part) prefer cards with no annual fee that provide value the second they enter your wallet.

Whether you want simple cash back, category bonuses, or flexible redemption options, these no-annual-fee cards deliver. We've reviewed dozens of options to find the best cards for different spending styles.

Read on to find the right one for your wallet.

  • Our team of experts reviewed over 260 credit cards
  • We evaluate all credit cards across the same 4 key criteria: value, welcome experience, fees, and perks
  • Our credit card ratings are never influenced by our advertising partners
  • If we wouldn't recommend an offer to a close family member, we won't recommend it to you

Our aim is to maintain a balanced best-of list featuring top-scoring credit cards from reputable brands. 'Best for' category selections on this page are determined by our editors, and a single card may be recognized in multiple categories.

Our top no annual fee credit card picks

Best for choice category cash back: Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card

  • You'll earn 6% cash back in your choice category for the first year — double the rewards! You’ll also get a $200 online cash rewards bonus after qualifying purchases. This card offers flexible cash back and valuable perks, all with no annual fee.

Best for bonus category cash back: Discover it® Cash Back (see rates and fees)

  • Earn 5% cash back on everyday purchases at different places you shop each quarter like grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, and more, up to the quarterly maximum when you activate and 1% back on all other purchases -- plus Discover will match all the cash back you’ve earned at the end of your first year.

Best no annual fee credit cards

Best for customized cash back: Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card

With the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card, you can earn 6% cash back for the first year in the category of your choice (from options like gas, online shopping, or dining), get 2% at grocery stores and wholesale clubs for the first $2,500 in combined choice category/grocery store/wholesale club quarterly purchases, and 1% on all other purchases.

It's the perfect card if you want more control over your rewards, or if you spend a lot in a particular category and want to maximize those earnings.

How to choose the best no annual fee card for you

Start by identifying where you spend most. Flat-rate cards are best if your spending is spread out. If you spend a lot in specific areas -- like dining, groceries, or online shopping -- look for cards with category bonuses or customization.

Also consider perks like intro APRs or welcome bonuses. Some cards offer extra value in your first year, even without a fee.

No annual fee cards vs. annual fee cards

No-fee cards are best for low-maintenance users or anyone new to rewards. They're simple to use and don't cost anything to keep. Annual fee cards often deliver more value through premium perks or higher earning potential, but only if you use those benefits regularly. Otherwise, you're stuck paying for a fee just to use the card, in which case you're better off with one of the no-annual fee cards on this list.

What credit score do you need for a no annual fee card?

Most no-fee cards require good credit (typically a FICO® Score of 670 or higher), but a few options are available to those with fair credit. Approval also depends on your income and current debts.
