Federal employees aren't the only ones feeling the government shutdown's squeeze. United Technologies (RTX -0.70%) announced today that "thousands of workers" could be put on furlough if the shutdown continues.

The company relies on federally employed Defense Contract Management Agency inspectors to move ahead with work, and their furlough puts much of United Technologies' operations at a standstill.

United is currently expecting to put 2,000 of its BLACK HAWK helicopter employees on furlough next Monday (October 7), with facilities from Connecticut to Alabama to Florida affected by the shutdown. It also warned that it would be forced to increase those numbers to a companywide 4,000 by the end of next week or 5,000 by November.
