Full Capital One Venture X Business review

This card is a good fit for: Business owners who want a travel rewards card and spend at least $10,000 per month.

Top perks

The Capital One Venture X Business has an impressive list of features.

150,000 miles

You earn a bonus of 150,000 miles after spending $30,000 in the first 3 months. This is easily one of the most valuable sign-up bonuses. You can get $0.01 per mile on travel bookings, or potentially get even more value by transferring them to Capital One travel partners. At a minimum, the sign-up bonus is worth $1,500 toward travel. Just make sure you'll be able to reach that hefty spending requirement before you decide to apply.

Earn up to 10X miles miles per $1

The Capital One Venture X Business Credit Card earns:

  • 10X miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
  • 5X miles on flights booked through Capital One Travel
  • 2X miles on all other purchases

Those rates make it one of the best business cards for earning rewards. The highest flat rate we've seen from business cards is 2 points/miles per $1. This Capital One card matches that, and it also earns bonus rates on your Capital One Travel bookings.

$300 annual travel credit

Every year, this card offers a $300 credit for bookings through Capital One Travel. It can be applied to one booking of $300 or more, or multiple bookings of less than $300. The Capital One Travel portal is easy to navigate and has a best price guarantee, so you shouldn't have any trouble using this travel credit.

10,000 bonus miles on every account anniversary

Starting on your first account anniversary, you'll get 10,000 bonus miles every year. As mentioned above, Capital One miles are worth $0.01 per mile for travel bookings, which means you can get a minimum of $100 in value from this yearly bonus.

Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit

Like many top travel cards, the Capital One Venture X Business Credit Card covers your membership fee to either the Global Entry or TSA PreCheck program. It offers a fee credit of up to $100 every four years. These Trusted Traveler Programs allow you to get through airport security and customs more quickly. Make sure to go with Global Entry, because it includes a TSA PreCheck membership.

No preset spending limit

There's no credit limit with this card. Instead, your spending limit adapts based on your spending behavior, payment history, credit profile, and other factors. To be clear, this doesn't mean unlimited spending. It means the amount you spend can change over time.

That's helpful, especially for businesses that spend a lot, because your spending power could increase to fit your needs. Note that this is a charge card, and you need to pay off your card's full balance every month.

Free employee cards

This Capital One business card has an annual fee, but fortunately, employee cards don't. You can add free employee cards to your account for their business spending, and you'll earn rewards on their purchases. Capital One gives you the option of setting customized spending limits on employee cards. And just like with your own Capital One card, you can lock and unlock employee cards at any time.

Spending and account management tools

The Capital One Venture X Business Credit Card has quite a few tools that can be useful for managing your business. These include:

  • Account managers: Assign an account manager who's authorized to make purchases and payments, review spending, and resolve issues for you.
  • Purchase records: Downloadable in multiple formats, including Quicken®, QuickBooks®, and Excel®.
  • Year-end summaries: An itemized report of your spending to simplify budgeting and tax filing.
  • Recurring transaction records: Pull up a list of merchants that charge your business every month.

Flexible redemption options

This card earns Capital One Venture miles. There are several ways to use them, but the best option is to redeem them for travel. You can do that by:

  • Redeeming miles for cash travel purchases at a rate of $0.01 per mile. Capital One lets you redeem miles as a statement credit toward previous travel purchases. Or, you can redeem them through Capital One Travel.
  • Transferring miles to Capital One travel partners. You can transfer miles to over 15 travel loyalty programs, including Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Avianca LifeMiles, and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. When you transfer miles, you can use them through the partner's loyalty program.

If there are any frequent flyer programs you like in Capital One's list of partners, transfers are a great way to use your miles. I always transfer my miles and have gotten values of $0.02 per mile, $0.03 per mile, and sometimes more this way. If you want to keep it simple and save time, you can always use your rewards for cash travel purchases at $0.01 per mile.

What could be improved

There are a couple of drawbacks with this business card from Capital One.

Spending requirement for sign-up bonus

While this card has one of the biggest sign-up bonuses we've seen, it also has one of the highest spending requirements to earn that bonus. To reiterate, you need to spend $30,000 on purchases in the first 3 months to earn a bonus of 150,000 miles.

For many business owners, spending $10,000 per month won't be a problem. If your business doesn't spend that much, you're better off looking at other credit card reviews for a different card.

Annual fee

Since it's a premium travel card, the Capital One Venture X Business Credit Card charges a $395 annual fee. However, it's much easier to get your money's worth (and more) with this card than it is with almost any other travel card.

Each year, you get a $300 annual credit with Capital One Travel. You also get those 10,000 yearly bonus miles after your first account anniversary, and those can be redeemed for $100. With just those two benefits, you're already ahead on the annual fee. It all comes down to whether you'll use this card's perks. If you will, then the annual fee is a bargain.

Pay-in-full card

The Capital One Venture X Business Credit Card is a pay-in-full charge card. Your balance is due in full every month. If you don't pay it off, you'll be charged a 2.99% late fee on your outstanding statement balance and your account will be considered past due until you pay in full.

This isn't a big issue, and in fact, some would consider it a good thing. Paying off your card's full balance is a smart habit, because you avoid interest charges. But there are business owners who like to use their cards for financing expenses. Business cards with a 0% intro APR work well for that. If you have any doubts about paying off your balance, this isn't the card for you.

Suggested credit score

A FICO® Score of 720 or higher is recommended to apply for the Capital One Venture X Business Credit Card. Capital One designed this card for business owners with excellent credit.

Since this is a business card, Capital One will ask for the details of your business during the application process. Any type of business can work, including a sole proprietorship.

The Capital One Venture X Business Credit Card is right for you if:

You're looking for a business travel card, and you have a business that spends at least $10,000 per month.

With all its perks, and how easily it pays for itself, the Capital One Venture X Business Credit Card is an incredible value. The caveat is that only businesses with high spending will get maximum value from it and earn the sign-up bonus. If your business spending fits the bill, then this Capital One card could be the perfect fit.

Our credit card methodology

At The Motley Fool Ascent, we rate credit cards on a five-star scale (1 = poor, 5 = best). Our rating criteria includes rewards rates, welcome bonuses, fees, and perks like travel credits and 0% intro APR offers to evaluate our ratings.

We combine these factors with an evaluation of brand reputation and customer satisfaction to ensure you're getting the best card recommendations. Learn more about how The Ascent rates credit cards.

FAQs

  • The Capital One Venture X Business Credit Card is one of the more difficult cards to get. It's intended for business owners with excellent credit, so a FICO® Score of at least 720 is recommended before applying. Capital One will also look closely at other factors, including your business income and previous credit applications.

  • You'll pay $395 yearly for the Capital One Venture X Business Credit Card. While the fee is on the high end, it more than makes up for itself with just the $300 annual Capital One Travel credit and 10,000 yearly bonus anniversary miles (worth $100). That's not even factoring in any of this card's other many benefits.
