You can also redeem your cash back earnings for gift cards.

2. Dosh

Dosh
Best for: Cash back app for online and in-person shoppingDosh

Dosh is another free app that made our best coupon app list. Dosh rewards shoppers with cash back rewards. You can also earn rewards when you book hotels through Dosh. Unlike some other apps, you don't have to activate an offer to earn. Instead, you link your credit cards or debit cards, and earnings will be automatic. Debit cards must be used as credit to earn rewards. Additional rewards opportunities may be made available to Visa cardholders as "Tap to Activate Offers." These offers must be activated to earn rewards.

Dosh features many retailers. There's an account minimum of $15 required for payment. You can request payment to your PayPal or Venmo account or donate your earnings to charity. Cash back rewards vary by retailer. Some cash back offers within the app are for online purchases only, while others are for in-store and online.

Dosh is free to download and use, but you'll be charged an account maintenance fee if your account remains inactive for 12 months. This $4.99 fee is deducted from your Dosh account balance. This fee is never charged to credit cards or taken from bank accounts.

  • Types of coupons: Cash back rewards
  • Cost: Free, but a $4.99 account maintenance fee is charged for inactive accounts
  • Operating systems: Android, iOS
  • Full Dosh review

3. Rakuten

Rakuten
Best for: Cash back app for online shoppersRakuten

Rakuten is another best coupon apps pick, and it functions similarly to other cash back apps. After activating offers, you'll earn cash back rewards when you shop with select retailers. Rewards vary. Some retailers offer a cash back percentage based on how much you spend with them, while others provide a specific dollar amount.

Rakuten works with over 3,500 retailers. Payment is made every quarter via PayPal transfer or paper check. You'll need a minimum of $5.01 in your account to receive a payment. Your earnings will carry into the next quarter if your balance is below the minimum threshold.

  • Types of coupons: Cash back rewards
  • Cost: Free
  • Operating systems: Android, iOS, browser extension
  • Full Rakuten review

4. ShopKick

Shopkick
Best for: Shopping rewardsShopkick

Shopkick is not quite a coupon app, but it offers rewards. With this app, you'll earn rewards when shopping online, in person, and when scanning (but not buying) select items in-store.

Instead of earning cash back, like with similar apps, you'll earn "kicks," or rewards points, which you can redeem for digital gift cards. In addition to being rewarded for shopping, Shopkick offers other ways to earn rewards, like watching ads.

To earn kicks without making purchases, enter a participating retailer and scan select products with the in-app scanner. To earn kicks via purchases, shop at participating stores and earn automatically with a linked credit card or eligible debit card, or make your purchase and submit a receipt. You can also shop at select online stores through the app to earn kicks.

Gift cards are available from a variety of retailers. Rewards vary, but most rewards are 250 kicks per dollar. For example, a $25 gift card would typically require 6,250 kicks.

  • Types of coupons: Kicks (points) earned that can be redeemed for digital gift cards
  • Cost: Free
  • Operating systems: Android, iOS
  • Full Shopkick review

5. Shopmium

Shopmium
Shopmium

Shopmium is a cash back coupon app. You can earn cash back on everyday purchases made in store and online at supermarkets and other retailers. You'll need to download the app and create an account to earn cash back. When you see an offer you like, activate it by clicking the plus button. Like some other coupon apps, you must activate offers to earn cash back.

Some offers are store-specific, but that's not always the case, so it's essential to review any restrictions listed. Sometimes, you may be unable to claim certain offers at specific stores. Additionally, most offers outline a purchase date timeline. You must activate and complete offers during the dates listed. Before shopping, review the terms of each offer.

You must submit proof of purchase for verification. To do this, click the "Redeem" button and upload a photo of your receipt or a copy of your credit card statement showing the date of purchase, product, price, store, and total amount spent. Then, you'll need to scan the product barcodes. You should keep your receipt until your cash back earnings are approved.

A stand-out feature of Shopmium is it has no minimum cash out amount, nor do you have to request a payout. Once your cash back earnings have been approved, payment will be sent automatically to the payment app of your choice. This is a notable difference from many popular coupon and cash back rewards apps, like Ibotta and Rakuten. Shopmium offers two convenient payment methods: Venmo and PayPal.

  • Types of coupons: Cash back rewards
  • Cost: Free
  • Operating systems: Android, iOS

Note: Our best coupon apps list previously included Coupons.com. However, the Coupons.com mobile app was discontinued in July 2023 and has since been acquired by Shopmium.

6. Groupon

Groupon

Groupon is another one of the best money-saving apps on our list. Groupon offers discounted deals for purchase, which provide discounted services or products at participating retailers. Once you buy a Groupon deal, you'll get a code or voucher to redeem your purchase.

  • Types of coupons: Discount deals, digital coupons

How do coupon apps work?

Coupon apps are simple to use, but they function in different ways. Some apps require you to buy items to earn rewards, like cash back apps do. Others offer discounted deals available for purchase to save on a product or service. Other best coupon apps work by giving you a coupon or discount code to save money when you shop at participating retailers.

Types of coupon code apps

There are several types of coupon code apps and money-saving apps available. Here are some examples:

  • Cash back apps: These apps offer cash back rewards. You'll accumulate cash back earnings when you shop at participating retailers and buy eligible items.
  • Gift card rewards apps: These apps reward you for making eligible purchases at participating retailers. You can earn rewards points, which you can redeem for gift cards.
  • Discount deals apps: These apps allow you to buy products or services at a discounted price.
  • Coupons and coupon code apps: These apps offer discount coupons, coupon codes, or promotional codes to help you lower your bill when shopping.

How much money can you save by using coupon apps?

How much money you can save by using coupon apps varies greatly. Your success depends on your spending habits, how often you activate offers, and whether you frequently shop at participating retailers. To maximize earnings, don't forget to use these apps.

Using rewards credit cards to pay for regular purchases that you've budgeted for and can pay off in full is an excellent way to boost the rewards you earn when shopping. But remember to only buy what you can afford. You don't want to overspend or risk accumulating expensive credit card debt by carrying a balance on your credit card. Coupon apps can be a great option if you're looking for ways to spend less money or earn cash back or other rewards when shopping. Ditch paper coupons and give these apps a try. Spending less when shopping in person or online can help you reach your personal finance goals.

We recommend putting cash back earnings or money saved into a savings account to earn interest. If you need a new savings account, check out our list of the best savings accounts available.
