Best Travel Credit Cards of April 2026

Review Updated
Joel O'Leary
Many or all of the products here are from our partners that compensate us. It’s how we make money. But our editorial integrity ensures that our product ratings are not influenced by compensation.

There's a version of your next trip where you're sipping something cold in an airport lounge instead of fighting for an outlet near gate C47. Where your hotel room is an upgrade. Where the flight was (at least partially) free.

That version exists. And the right travel credit card is usually what makes it happen.

We've reviewed 260+ credit cards at Motley Fool Money and our team has redeemed well over a million points across flights, hotels, and experiences around the world. We know which cards just look good on paper, and which ones really make your trips cheaper and more fun.

Our picks below are the ones we'd recommend to a friend -- because honestly, we have.

  • Our team of experts reviewed over 260 credit cards
  • We evaluate all credit cards across the same 4 key criteria: value, welcome experience, fees, and perks
  • Our credit card ratings are never influenced by our advertising partners
  • If we wouldn't recommend an offer to a close family member, we won't recommend it to you

Our aim is to maintain a balanced best-of list featuring top-scoring credit cards from reputable brands. 'Best for' category selections on this page are determined by our editors, and a single card may be recognized in multiple categories.

Top picks: Travel credit cards

If you want unlimited rewards: Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card (see rates and fees)

  • Earn unlimited 2X miles on every purchase and use them flexibly -- simple, powerful, and honestly kind of hard to mess up.

If you want luxury travel perks: American Express Platinum Card® (see rates and fees)

  • Over $3,500 in annual value across travel, entertainment, dining, and more. Plus access to 1,550+ airport lounges. Terms apply.

$250 Travel Credit + 75,000 Miles

  • This is one of our favorite credit cards — period. The huge limited-time $250 travel credit + 75,000-mile bonus (worth up to $1,000 towards travel) is one of the highest we’ve seen for a card with just a $95 annual fee. We love the dead-simple yet lucrative rewards structure: unlimited 2X miles on every purchase you make, plus 5X on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, and up to a $120 credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck®.

Miles are easier to redeem than most travel cards with options like statement credits, travel bookings, or point transfers. Add it all up and it’s easy to see why this is one of the best (and most popular) travel cards available today.

Why we like it: This is technically a premium card -- but it's way more attainable than you'd think. The $300 annual travel credit and 10,000 bonus miles every anniversary can basically offset that $395 annual fee (see rates and fees), making this one of the better values in the premium travel card space. Add in lounge access and top-tier rewards on hotels and flights, and this card punches way above its weight.

Who it's best for: Frequent travelers who want a taste of the premium experience without going full luxury-card-fee territory. Just know you'll want your credit in great shape before applying.

Why we like it: The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (see rates and fees) is an OG card within the travel rewards category -- and it's still one of the best after all these years. A $95 annual fee that's easy to justify, strong rewards on travel and dining, and Chase Ultimate Rewards points that are genuinely flexible and valuable. The travel protections alone -- trip cancellation, rental car coverage, lost luggage -- are super rare for an entry level travel card.

Who it's best for: This is the sweet spot card for travelers who want serious rewards without a serious annual fee. If you eat out regularly and travel a few times a year, this card will work hard for you. Also a fantastic pick if you're already in the Chase ecosystem.

We rate travel credit cards based on how well they reward frequent travelers — not just with points and miles, but with valuable perks and flexible redemption options. Our scoring prioritizes cards that offer strong earning rates and a rewarding travel experience.

Our highest-rated travel cards have:

  • Elevated rewards on travel or everyday purchases, with the ability to transfer points
  • Flexible redemption options through travel portals or transfer partners
  • Welcome bonuses that meaningfully offset the annual fee in the first year
  • Perks that improve the travel experience, like airport lounge access, statement credits, and trip protections

We combine these factors with an evaluation of brand reputation and customer satisfaction to ensure you're getting the best travel card recommendations. Our aim is to maintain a balanced best-of list featuring top-scoring travel credit cards from reputable brands. 'Best for' category selections on this page are determined by our editors, and a single card may be recognized in multiple categories.

How to choose the best travel card for you

First, look beyond the cards with the fanciest welcome bonus or biggest headline perks. They might look amazing on paper, but not truly match how you spend, live, and travel.

A little self discovery goes a long way before picking a rewards card.

Here's how to think about it.

1. Start with your traveler type

General travel cards are the most flexible. You earn points or miles you can redeem towards flights, hotels, and more without being tied to one brand. These are great if you book wherever the best deal is (as you'll usually get boosted value when booking inside the issuer's travel portal).

Co-branded hotel and airline credit cards make more sense if you're loyal to a specific brand. Free checked bags, room upgrades, priority boarding -- the perks get really good when they're tailored to where you already spend money.

2. Don't let the annual fee scare you

A high annual fee isn't a red flag -- it's just math. A card with a $200 annual fee that gives you $200 in travel credits is basically paying for itself (as long as you use the credit).

Run the numbers on any premium cards you're looking at. Make sure the credits you'll use and rewards you'll earn will outweigh the fee -- and more.

3. Match the rewards to your real spending habits

The best rewards structure is the one that reflects your actual life -- not your aspirational one. If you eat out constantly and travel a few times a year, a card with strong dining and travel multipliers will work hard for you. If you want to keep it simple, a flat-rate cash back card that earns the same on everything is totally underrated.

4. Consider stacking cards once you're ready

One great travel card is a solid start. Two well-chosen cards working together is a strategy.

You might want to pair a premium card for flights and hotels with a no-annual-fee card for everyday spending. This can let you earn the highest possible rate across everything you buy. It sounds complicated, but it really isn't.

How to apply for a travel credit card

Most travel card applications take just a few minutes online.

Before you apply, make sure your credit is in good shape (most travel cards want good to excellent credit), so it's worth knowing where you stand before you hit submit.

The application will ask for your basic info, like:

  • Name and address
  • Annual income
  • Social Security number
  • Employer info
  • Anything else needed to verify your identity

Once approved, you'll typically have your card within seven to 10 business days. If you aren't approved, the issuer will send a letter telling you exactly why. It will have further instructions if you'd like to know more.

One piece of advice if you're new to travel cards: only apply for one card at a time. Multiple applications in a short window can ding your credit score, and that's a headache nobody needs.

The bottom line

There's never been a better time to let your credit card fund your adventures. Pick the one that fits your life, swipe it on stuff you're already buying, and watch the points stack up.

The hardest part is choosing where to spend your rewards. Tropical vacation in Hawaii? Adventure in Istanbul? The sky is the limit.

FAQs

  • If you're just getting started, keep it simple. A flat-rate card with no-annual fee is a great first move -- you earn rewards on everything without the stress of a complex reward system. Get comfortable with one card, learn how redemptions work, and level up from there.

  • Honestly, not as much as you'd think. Both are currencies you earn and redeem for travel -- the main difference is branding. Miles are typically (but not always) tied to airline programs, while points tend to be more flexible and transferable. All the best cards let you do both.

  • It depends on the card, but most major travel cards keep your points alive as long as your account stays open and in good standing. The ones to watch are airline and hotel loyalty programs -- those can expire if your account goes inactive for a stretch.
