This is one of our favorite cards for balance transfers. It has 0% intro APR for 21 months on balance transfers and a discounted intro balance transfer fee for the first four months. That combo makes it one of the most generous balance transfer offers we’ve seen. But it doesn't have much ongoing value after the intro 0% APR period ends.

What to know before applying for a balance transfer card
A balance transfer card can be a game-changer when you're trying to dig out of debt -- but only if you know the rules. Keep these points in mind before you apply:
- Credit score counts. Most of the best 0% intro APR offers go to borrowers with good or excellent credit (around 670+ FICO® Score). But issuers also weigh your income, existing debts, and overall financial picture -- so a slightly lower score isn't always a dealbreaker.
- The 0% clock runs out. The interest-free period doesn't last forever. Once it ends, any leftover balance will likely face a rate north of 20%. To stay ahead:
- Pick a card with enough time to clear your balance
- Map out a payoff plan that fits your budget
- Hold off on new purchases until the old balance is gone
- Same-bank transfers aren't allowed. You can't shift debt from one Chase card to another Chase card (or Citi-to-Citi, etc.). Balance transfers are meant to win over new customers, not shuffle balances inside the same bank.
- Late payments can wipe out your savings. A 0% intro APR doesn't excuse skipping payments. Miss even one due date and you could lose the promo rate and get hit with the regular -- or even penalty -- APR. Setting up auto-pay can protect you from that headache.
Time to take control
Handled wisely, a balance transfer card can save you hundreds -- or even thousands -- in interest and help you finally get ahead. With offers lasting up to two full years, now's a smart time to lock in some breathing room. Check out this week's top picks above or explore more balance transfer options here.
FAQs
-
Most balance transfer cards charge a fee of 3% to 5% of the amount transferred. For example, moving $5,000 to a new card could cost $150 to $250. Even with the fee, you'll likely save more in interest if you pay off your balance during the 0% intro APR period.
-
With average credit card rates around 21%, moving your balance to a 0% intro APR balance transfer card could save you hundreds (or even thousands) in interest over time and help you pay off the debt much sooner.
-
Choose a card with a 0% intro APR period long enough to clear your debt. Make a monthly payoff plan and avoid new purchases until your old balance is repaid.
