KEY POINTS

  • The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card earns unlimited 2% cash rewards on purchases and has a big welcome bonus.
  • It also has little-known perks that can be just as valuable, including travel benefits through the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection.
  • In addition, cardholders can get complimentary cellphone protection and use this card to refinance credit card debt.

The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card (see rates and fees) is one of the credit cards I recommend most often. In part, that's because of a few highlights that you may already know about. It earns an unlimited 2% cash rewards on all purchases, no matter the spending category. If you spend $30,000 per year on it, that's $600 in cash rewards, all from a card with no annual fee.

It also offers a $200 cash rewards welcome bonus, which you earn after spending $500 on purchases in the first three months. So if your goal is earning as much as possible in cash rewards, this Wells Fargo card is a fantastic choice.

Even though those benefits get the most attention, there are also several others that can be just as useful. Whether you have the card already or you're thinking about applying, here are the little-known perks you should know about.

1. Access to the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection

Cash rewards credit cards normally aren't known for their travel perks. But the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card is a Visa Signature® card, and one feature these cards offer is access to the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection.

This is a curated collection of prestigious properties around the world. As a cardholder, you get several perks on bookings you make through the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection, including:

  • A best available rate guarantee
  • An automatic room upgrade upon arrival, when available
  • Complimentary breakfast for two
  • A $25 food or beverage credit
  • VIP Guest status
  • Late checkout upon request, when available

2. Get up to $600 in cellphone protection

If you pay your monthly cellphone bill with the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card, you're covered should disaster strike. This card's cellphone protection can reimburse you for repair or replacement costs due to damage or theft. Here are the important details.

  • Each approved claim has a limit of $600, or the cost to repair or replace your cellphone, whichever is less.
  • Each claim has a $25 deductible.
  • There's a limit of two paid claims per 12-month period.
  • It doesn't cover cellphones that are lost.

3. Save money on credit card debt with a 0% intro APR

Many people get this card for cash rewards, and it excels in that area. But it also has a 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and qualifying balance transfers. Balance transfers must be made within 120 days to qualify. Once the intro period ends, there is a go-to 20.24%, 25.24%, or 29.99% Variable APR.

That means in addition to earning cash rewards, you can also use this card to refinance credit card debt. Let's say that you have $3,000 in credit card debt with a 20% APR, and you pay $250 per month toward it. With those numbers, it will take you 13 months to pay off your debt, and you'll pay $375 in interest.

If you transfer your debt over to this Wells Fargo card within the first 120 days, there'd be an introductory balance transfer fee of either 3% or $5, whichever is higher. On a $3,000 balance, that would be $90. But you'd then be able to pay down your balance at a 0% intro APR. If you paid the same $250 per month, you'd be out of debt in 12 months, without any more interest charges. Overall, you save $285 this way.

4. Withdraw your cash rewards at Wells Fargo ATMs

Wells Fargo gives you several ways to redeem cash rewards. You can redeem them toward purchases, or as a credit toward a qualifying Wells Fargo credit card, checking account, or mortgage account.

If you have a Wells Fargo debit card or ATM card, another option is to withdraw your cash rewards from a Wells Fargo ATM. You must make your redemption in $20 increments. This could be convenient if you need to get quick cash.

There are plenty of quality credit card options available. If you're looking for a cash rewards card with no annual fee, the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card could be a match. And if you already have this card, make sure you know about all of its perks so you can get the most out of it.
