KEY POINTS

  • Shop app offers an AI personal assistant for faster deals.
  • Honey extension searches for coupons to save shoppers $126 yearly.
  • Fakespot extension filters out fake reviews for reliable products.

ChatGPT has turned AI into a thing. No longer must you be a scientist or Harvard grad to dabble in the mysteries of talking robots. Which begs the question, where is your personal shopper? Your style advisor? Your AI-powered Jarvis?

So far, no shopping bot has gone totally mainstream yet. But there are ways AI can help you find the best shopping deals. Read on for some of the fastest.

Shop app: Built-in AI personal assistant

Shop app offers a selection of stores powered by Shopify, an e-commerce giant on par with Amazon. It's like Amazon, except less ads, fewer features, and slower shipping. But the app is free and comes with your personal shopping assistant.

You can talk to the AI in a chat box. Questions it will answer include "What moisturizers are good for sensitive skin," "I'm looking for workout clothes," and "Help me find a hoodie." Two of those aren't questions, but regardless, the chatbot gets the job done.

Shop app users can click the star button in the app's upper-left corner to chat. Website users can shop via the main search bar, and the bot will pop up to your right, providing commentary on your shopping experience. You can chat directly in the browser.

From what I've seen, the bot makes it faster to filter by gender, color, sales status, etc. But it's not as good as ChatGPT at parsing misspellings. Still, if you're already using the Shop app, a quick chat could help you find deals faster.

Honey: Search for coupons fast

Honey is a Chrome browser extension that automatically scans the internet for coupon codes and lets you know if it finds something sweet. It's free, but it does collect your information.

How to use Honey:

  • Download the extension
  • Shop as usual
  • Press the "Apply Coupons" button at checkout

It's super easy. It'll even compare Amazon sellers for you. If Honey finds a cheaper version of the product on Amazon, it'll let you know. Honey claims to save users $126 yearly on average (at least, as of 2020). That, right there, is grocery money.

Recent reviews are mixed. Some users dislike the frequent pop-ups, and Honey often has little to offer. But others claim it's saved them a decent chunk of cash, so it could be worth looking into. If it's not your speed, you could uninstall it in seconds.

Fakespot: Filter fake reviews fast

Fakespot is another Chrome browser extension. This one filters out fake reviews on Amazon, eBay, Walmart, and Best Buy, among others. Like Honey, it's free -- though it does collect user information.

I've used it on Amazon to filter ads and products bursting with fake-sounding reviews. It gets me to the real stuff faster. If I want in-depth information or a Fakespot scan is outdated, I can quickly get Fakespot to perform another analysis on the spot. Takes about 30 seconds.

If you analyze a product, you can chat with the Fakespot AI. I used it to analyze one of my favorite books and asked it for the cons. The bot told me the main character was unlikable, and there were grammar mistakes. Good one, Fakespot. I'll never see The Land the same way.

Save a bit more with cash back cards

You can use AI to find the best shopping deals and swipe with cash back cards to earn rewards. It's an easy one-two combo I use when shopping online. Any one of these products could help you improve your personal finances in 2024.

That said, AI isn't at the point where a universal AI assistant does all your grocery shopping. It's a little more complicated than that. The Shop app is limited to Shopify stores and Honey sometimes glitches. Plus, the Fakespot extension doesn't cover all reviews, such as those at Costco.

But hey, it's better than nothing. I'll watch for the latest AI shopping assistants so you can find the best deals quickly. When a new one appears, you'll be the first to know.
