Best bank bonuses and offers of January 2021

by: Kailey Hagen  |  Jan. 12, 2021

The Ascent is reader-supported: we may earn a commission from offers on this page. It’s how we make money. But our editorial integrity ensures our experts’ opinions aren’t influenced by compensation.

Bank bonuses and offers are cash bonuses banks give to customers who meet certain criteria. It's another way for banks to stay competitive and draw in new clients. These bank deals are usually limited-time offers, so you must capitalize on them within the given time frame if you want to earn the extra cash.

Banks often offer checking and savings account bonuses for opening a new account. Usually, there are other criteria you must meet as well, like depositing a certain amount of money into the account and leaving it there for a certain number of days. Once you've met all the criteria, you earn your bank account bonus.

Read on if you want to earn one of the best bank bonuses and get a general overview of how these bank incentives work.

Best checking account bonuses and offers

Here's a look at some of the best bank promotions available on checking accounts right now:

HSBC Premier Checking $600 bonus

What you get: 3% cash back on qualifying direct deposits into your account for the first six months, up to $100 per month.

How you earn it: Open a new HSBC Premier Checking account by March 31, 2021 and set up qualifying direct deposits, like paycheck deposits, pensions, government benefits, or other monthly income. It's one of the best bank promotions because earning it is straightforward for most customers.

How you qualify: You must not have had an HSBC consumer deposit or investment account between June 29, 2017 and June 29, 2020 to qualify. Many bank bonuses have similar requirements.

When you'll get it: HSBC will deposit your bank account bonus into your account within about eight weeks of completing the qualifying activities.

Credit inquiry: HSBC does a soft pull, which will not affect your credit score.

Where to open an account: You must apply on HSBC's website to earn this bonus. Most bank account bonuses are only available online.

Monthly fees: There is a $50 monthly maintenance fee, which you can waive if you have $75,000 or more in combined HSBC deposit and investment accounts, if you have at least $5,000 in recurring direct deposits each month, or if you have a mortgage with an original loan amount of at least $500,000 with HSBC.

HSBC Advance Checking $240 bonus

What you get: 3% cash back on qualifying direct deposits into your account for the first six months, up to $40 per month.

How you earn it: Open a new HSBC Advance Checking account by March 31, 2021 and set up qualifying direct deposits.

How you qualify: You must not have had an HSBC consumer deposit or investment account between June 29, 2017 and June 29, 2020 to qualify.

When you'll get it: HSBC will deposit your bank bonus into your account within about eight weeks of completing the qualifying activities. Most bank offers have a similar waiting period.

Credit inquiry: HSBC does a soft pull, which will not affect your credit score. This is the case with most bank deals.

Where to open an account: You must apply on HSBC's website if you would like to earn this bank offer.

Monthly fees: There is a $25 monthly maintenance fee, which you can waive if you have $5,000 or more in combined HSBC deposit and investment accounts, a recurring direct deposit each month, or a mortgage with HSBC. We consider this one of the best bank offers because the account's maintenance fee is easily waived.

Aspiration Spend & Save $100 bonus

What you get: $100 bonus.

How you earn it: Open a new Aspiration Spend & Save account with at least $10 and use your Aspiration debit card to make at least $1,000 in purchases within the first 60 days of account opening.

How you qualify: This offer is only available to those who do not already have Aspiration Spend & Save accounts.

When you'll get it: It can take up to 120 days from the day you complete all the qualifying activities to receive your bank incentive. Note this is longer than many other bank bonuses.

Credit inquiry: Similar to other bank account offers, Aspiration does a soft credit inquiry that doesn't affect your credit score.

Where to open an account: Aspiration does not have branches, so you must open your account online. However, even brick-and-mortar institutions tend to limit their bank account bonuses to customers who open accounts online -- so this shouldn't deter you.

Monthly fees: The Aspiration Spend & Save account enables you to decide how much, if anything, you would like to pay in monthly fees.

Chase Total Checking® $200 bonus

What you get: $200 bonus.

How you earn it: Open a new Chase Total Checking® account by Jan. 20, 2021 and set up direct deposits to the account.

How you qualify: This offer is not available to existing Chase checking customers or customers whose accounts have been closed within the last 90 days or closed with a negative balance.

When you'll get it: You'll receive your $200 within 10 business days of fulfilling the criteria above.

Credit inquiry: Chase does a soft credit pull, which does not affect your credit.

Where to open an account: Like many other bank bonuses, you must open your Chase Total Checking® account online to claim this incentive.

Monthly fees: There is a $12 monthly maintenance fee, which you can waive if you have direct deposits of $500 or more in a month, a balance of $1,500 or more at the beginning of each day, or an average daily balance of $5,000 or more in all of your Chase deposit accounts.

Bank of America Advantage Banking $100 bonus

What you get: $100 bonus.

How you earn it: Open a new Bank of America Advantage Banking account by Dec. 31, 2020 and receive two qualifying direct deposits of $250 or more each within 90 days of opening your account. This is one of the best bank promotions because it requires minimal effort.

How you qualify: Only individuals who have not had a Bank of America personal checking account within the last six months are eligible for this bank offer. This is fairly average for bank account offers.

When you'll get it: Once you've fulfilled the requirements, Bank of America will deposit your $100 into your account within 60 days.

Credit inquiry: Bank of America does a soft pull, which does not hurt your credit.

Where to open an account: You must open your Bank of America Advantage Banking account online in order to claim this bonus.

Monthly fees: Depending on which Advantage Banking account you choose, you could owe a monthly fee ranging from $4.95 to $25 if you don't meet the qualifying activities to waive the maintenance fee. Because this bank account bonus is so small, make sure you avoid maintenance fees -- bank incentives disappear quickly in accounts with extra fees.

BB&T Bright Banking® $200 bonus

What you get: $200 bonus.

How you earn it: You must open a BB&T Bright Banking® account by Dec. 31, 2020 and complete two qualifying direct deposits of $500 or more each within 75 days of account opening.

How you qualify: You're not eligible for this bonus if you or anyone in your household currently has a BB&T personal checking account or has closed one within the last 12 months.

When you'll get it: BB&T conducts an account eligibility review between 76 and 90 days after your account opening. If you qualify for the bonus, you will receive it within four weeks of this review.

Credit inquiry: BB&T does a soft credit inquiry and it won't hurt your credit score.

Where to open an account: You can open a BB&T Bright Banking® account online or at one of the bank's branch locations.

Monthly fees: There is a $12 monthly maintenance fee, though you can waive it.

Chase College Checkingâ„  $100 bonus

What you get: $100 bonus.

How you earn it: Open a new Chase College Checking℠ account by Jan. 14, 2021 and make 10 qualifying transactions (debit card purchases, online bill payments, direct deposits, Chase QuickDeposit℠, check payments, or Chase QuickPay® with Zelle®) within 60 days of account opening. This ranks among the best bank account bonuses because earning it is simple.

How you qualify: You must be a college student between the ages of 17 and 24 to open a Chase College Checkingâ„  account with a valid student ID or proof of enrollment. This offer is not available to current Chase College Checkingâ„  account customers or those who have had a Chase checking account closed within the last 90 days or closed with a negative balance.

When you'll get it: Chase will deposit your bank bonus within 10 days of completing the qualifying activities. Chase deposits their bank incentives faster than most competitors' bank bonus offers.

Credit inquiry: Chase does a soft inquiry that won't hurt your credit (common among the best bank deals).

Where to open an account: Apply for a Chase College Checkingâ„  account online if you'd like to pursue this bonus.

Monthly fees: As long as you are a college student between the ages of 17 and 24, you qualify for no monthly service fee for up to five years. We believe it's important for the best bank bonuses to include as few long-term fees as possible, so this is a plus.

Citi Priority Package $700 bonus

What you get: $700 bonus.

How you earn it: Open a new Citi Priority Package by Jan. 5, 2021, deposit at least $50,000 in new-to-Citibank funds within 30 days of account opening, and maintain a balance of at least $50,000 in your accounts for at least 60 days. You must also open a savings account with Citi within 30 days of opening your Citi Priority Package.

How you qualify: You are eligible for this offer if you have not had a Citibank checking account within the past 180 days.

When you'll get it: You will receive your $700 bonus within 30 days of completing the qualifying activities. Of all the best bank account bonuses, this is one of the most valuable.

Credit inquiry: Citibank does a soft pull that doesn't affect your credit score.

Where to open an account: You must apply online if you're interested in taking advantage of this offer. Most of the best bank account bonuses are only available online.

Monthly fees: There's a $30 monthly service fee, which you can waive if you maintain a combined monthly balance of $50,000 or more in all your eligible linked accounts.

The Citibank Account Package $400 bonus

What you get: $400 bonus.

Where to open an account: You must apply for a Citibank Account Package online if you hope to earn this bonus.

Monthly fees: There's a $25 monthly fee if you don't maintain an average monthly balance of at least $10,000 in all of your eligible linked accounts.

Citi Basic Banking Package $200 bonus

What you get: $200 bonus.

How you earn it: Open a new Citi Basic Banking Package by Jan. 5, 2021 and deposit at least $5,000 in new-to-Citibank funds within 30 days of account opening.

How you qualify: Like most of the best bank offers, you can only take advantage of this bonus if you have not had a Citibank checking account within the last 180 days.

When you'll get it: You'll receive your bonus within 90 days of completing the qualifying activities.

Credit inquiry: Citi does a soft credit pull, and this does not affect your credit score.

Where to open an account: Open your Citi Basic Banking package online to earn this bonus (this is a common requirement among checking account offers).

Monthly fees: There's a $12 monthly fee. You can waive this if you make one qualifying direct deposit and one bill payment per statement cycle or if you maintain an average daily balance of $1,500 or more in your accounts. There is also no fee if you are 62 or older. The best bank bonuses have no long-term fees associated with the accounts, so if you can waive the fee or you qualify for a no-fee account, this may be a good choice for you.

Huntington National Bank Huntington 25 Checking $500 bonus

What you get: $500 bonus. This is the best bank bonus offer from Huntington National Bank.

How you earn it: Open a new Huntington 25 Checking account by Jan. 7, 2021, deposit at least $15,000 in new-to-Huntington funds into your account within 60 days. Similar to other bank account offers, you must keep your account open for 90 days.

How you qualify: This offer is only available to residents of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Also, as with most of the best checking account offers, only new Huntington customers who have not had a Huntington checking account within the last six months are eligible.

When you'll get it: You'll receive your $500 within 14 days of completing the qualifying activities. This stands out as one of the best bank account bonuses because you'll get your rewards fairly quickly.

Credit inquiry: Huntington does a soft credit pull that does not affect your credit.

Where to open an account: You may open your Huntington 25 Checking account online or at a branch location to claim your bonus. Many bank offers can't be redeemed at a branch, so this is unique. If you choose to open your account at a branch, you still have to visit Huntington’s website and enter your email to get the promo code you will need to claim the bonus.

Monthly fees: There's a $25 monthly fee, which you can waive if your average balance is $25,000 or more.

Huntington National Bank Huntington 5 Checking $200 bonus

What you get: $200 bonus.

How you earn it: Open a new Huntington 5 Checking account by Jan. 7, 2021, deposit at least $1,000 in new-to-Huntington funds into your account within 60 days, and keep your account open for 90 days.

How you qualify: This offer is only available to residents of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Only new Huntington customers who have not had a Huntington checking account within the last six months are eligible.

When you'll get it: You'll receive your $200 bonus within 14 days of completing the qualifying activities.

Credit inquiry: Huntington does a soft credit pull that does not affect your credit.

Where to open an account: Unlike many bank deals, you may open your Huntington 5 Checking account online or at a branch location to claim your bonus. If you choose to open your account at a branch, though, you need to enter your email on the Huntington 5 Checking offer page and the bank will send you a promo code.

Monthly fees: There's a $5 monthly fee, which you can waive if your average balance is $5,000 or more. The best bank promotions are attached to accounts without monthly fees, so we only recommend this if you can keep the minimum balance above that amount.

Huntington National Bank Asterisk-Free Checking $150 bonus

What you get: $150 bonus.

How you earn it: Open a new Huntington 5 Checking account by Jan. 7, 2021, deposit at least $1,000 in new-to-Huntington funds into your account within 60 days. As with most bank account bonuses, you need to keep your account open for 90 days.

How you qualify: This offer is only available to residents of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Only new Huntington customers who have not had a Huntington checking account within the last six months are eligible.

When you'll get it: Huntington will deposit your $150 into your account within 14 days of completing the qualifying activities. Many bank bonus offers don't deposit for 1-2 months, so 14 days is unusually fast.

Credit inquiry: Huntington National Bank does a soft credit inquiry that will not hurt your credit.

Where to open an account: You can open your Asterisk-Free Checking account online or at a branch location to claim this bonus. Those planning to open their account at a branch will need to enter their email on the Huntington Asterisk-Free Checking online offer page to get the necessary promo code.

Monthly fees: There is no monthly fee for this account. As many accounts charge a monthly fee, we consider this to be one of the best bank account bonuses in the long term.

Monthly fees: Monthly fees range from $7 to $50, depending on which KeyBank personal checking account you choose, but each account gives you opportunities to waive that fee. We think this is one of the best checking account offers because maintenance fees won't steal your bonus in the long term.

Where to open an account: You can open your new SunTrust Advantage Checking account online or at a SunTrust branch. Many bank promotions are only available online, so this is somewhat unique.

How you earn it: Open a new TD Beyond Checking account and have at least $2,500 in direct deposits within 60 days of account opening.

Best savings account promotions

These are some of the best savings account bonuses and offers available right now.

Chase Savings $150 bonus

What you get: $150 bonus.

How you earn it: Open a new Chase Savings account by Jan. 20, 2021, deposit at least $10,000 into the account within 20 business days of account opening, and maintain a balance of at least $10,000 for 90 days. While this may seem like a high minimum for some individuals, it's rare to find a savings account bonus that's not connected to a checking account bonus. If you're only interested in a savings account, this is one of the best bank offers available.

How you qualify: You qualify if you do not have a Chase Savings account already and you have not had a Chase Savings account closed within the last 90 days or closed with a negative balance.

When you'll get it: Out of all the best bank offers, this has one of the shortest waiting periods. You'll receive your $150 savings account bonus within 10 business days of completing the qualifying activities.

Credit inquiry: Chase does a soft credit pull that won't affect your credit score.

Where to open an account: You can apply for your Chase Savings account online to earn the bonus.

Monthly fees: The account includes a $5 monthly service fee, which you can waive in one of several ways.

Why do banks have promotions?

Bank account bonuses and offers are a way for banks to attract new customers who may be on the fence about where to place their money. Banking is a competitive business, especially with the rise of online banks that offer low fees and high APYs, so bank offers can give a bank account that little bit of extra appeal.

Checking bonuses are much more common than savings account offers. The main draw with savings accounts is the APY. Checking accounts often lack interest, which means a bonus can go a long way toward helping an account stand out. Savings account offers are more rare, but once in awhile you'll see bank promos featuring savings accounts.

What should I look for when choosing a bank account with a bonus or offer?

Here's what you should look for:

  1. Valuable long-term features. A bank bonus is nice, but it's a one-time offer. Once you've earned it, you're stuck with the bank account. So it doesn't make sense to open an account for the bonus alone if it doesn't have the features that will help you manage your money long term. The best bank deals will connect you with a bank you'll love for years to come.
  2. Ability to qualify. There's no sense in signing up for an account that offers one of the best bank bonus offers if you doubt your ability to meet the qualification requirements necessary to earn that bonus. Make sure you review all criteria necessary to earn the bonus first and note any deadlines so you don't accidentally disqualify yourself.
  3. Impressive bonus. All other factors being equal, you may as well go for the bank account that offers the largest bonus.

What rules apply to bank promotions?

To get a cash bonus when you open a checking or savings account, you normally need to be opening a new account with the bank and you must open the account during the promotional period. You might need to enter some type of promotional code or use a specific link when you sign up to claim the bonus.

Each bank offer will have its own criteria you must meet in order to earn the bonus. Usually, it involves depositing a certain amount of money into the account over the first few statement cycles, but some banks also require a certain number of transactions or a minimum balance over your first few statement cycles.

TIP

How can I maximize bank promotions and offers?

Do your research to determine which bank promos and offers provide the most money and are within your reach. Keeping more money in your accounts will open doors to better bank bonus offers. Also, investigate any monthly fees associated with the account before accepting any bank offers. If you can't waive these fees, they'll cut into your profits. The best bank offers are connected to fee-free accounts.

What banks offer checking and savings account bonuses or offers right now?

Here are a few banks offering checking and savings account bonuses you can claim now.

  1. Aspiration: Aspiration is an online bank that offers cash management accounts -- accounts that combine some of the features of checking and savings accounts. Not only do new customers get bank deals from Aspiration, but accounts also have other perks, like cash back on debit card purchases. Also, since very few banks offer a savings account bonus, this is a unique opportunity for those interesting in savings incentives.
  2. Bank of America: Bank of America offers one of the more unique bank promotions on its versatile Advantage Banking account, which enables you to choose between three accounts with different features and switch between them as often as you'd like.
  3. Chase: Chase has several bank account offers on its checking accounts and is one of the few banks to offer savings account bonuses. Chase typically gets bank incentives into qualifying customers' accounts much faster than many other banks. This is the best bank bonus if you're already interested in opening a Chase account.
  4. Citibank: Citibank's packages are also cash management accounts and several of them include bonuses for new customers, though you must be willing to sign up for both a checking and a savings account to take advantage of these. However, this is another situation where you can get a savings account bonus -- which can be rare.
  5. HSBC: HSBC takes an unusual approach to its checking account offers, providing cash back on debit card purchases rather than a flat cash rate. This is one of the best bank offers for individuals who use their debit card frequently.
  6. Huntington National Bank: Huntington National Bank is a regional bank that offers several checking account offers with relatively painless qualification requirements. There are several accounts to choose from, so it's easy to find a bonus you can earn and an account with the features you need long term.
  7. KeyBank: KeyBank rewards its Key@Work customers with checking account bonuses if they fulfill certain criteria. But your employer must be enrolled in the program, so not everyone will qualify for their checking account offers even if they meet the other criteria.
  8. PNC Bank: PNC Bank's Virtual Wallet account is another cash management account. You can earn a sizable reward if you are comfortable opening a checking and a savings account and depositing a few thousand dollars.
  9. SunTrust Bank: SunTrust is now part of Truist Bank, though it still offers its own checking account bonuses on its website. Only individuals who live in states where SunTrust has branches can apply for these bonuses.
  10. TD Bank: TD Bank consistently features checking account offers on its Beyond Checking and Convenience Checkingâ„  accounts and the qualification requirements are pretty easy to meet.
  11. Wells Fargo: Wells Fargo's checking account bonus is pretty sizable considering what you have to do to earn the bonus, though it might not be a good fit if you don't have thousands of dollars to spend.
