Gas credit cards are a convenient way to earn cash back on your purchases made at gas stations. They come in two forms: co-branded credit cards that are specific to a particular gas station chain, or general credit cards from banks and credit unions that offer higher cash back rates on gas station purchases.
The best gas credit cards have three things in common: they can be used at gas stations you frequent, they offer a high percentage of cash back on gas purchases, and they charge few fees. Curious to learn more? We'll do a quick drive-by of the best credit cards for gas below.

Gas credit cards are a way to earn rewards by fueling up your car. The most common type of gas credit card is a regular rewards credit card that offers extra points or cash back on gas purchases. Another type of gas credit card is what's known as a co-branded card. These cards are generally partnerships between banks and gas station companies, such as the ExxonMobil™ Smart Card (issued by Citi) or the Texaco Techron Advantage Credit Card (issued by Synchrony Bank). Most of the major gas station franchises offer these types of rewards credit cards.
Here’s what you should look for:
Gas credit cards are a good idea when you spend a lot on gas and you're willing to manage an extra credit card solely for your gas spending. It's a good idea to run the numbers and see how much extra cash back you might earn from a gas credit card, and then decide whether it's worth the extra hassle.
For example, let's say you already have a rewards credit card that offers 2% cash back on your purchases. You spend around $100 per month on gas. Now, imagine you find a gas credit card offering 4% cash back on gas purchases. That means you'd earn an extra $24 per year if you used this credit card for gas. Is that amount worth it to you? That's something only you can decide.

Gas credit cards can be worth it if gas is one of your biggest monthly expenses. However, many consumers spend more money in other areas, including groceries and restaurants.
Before you apply for a gas credit card, go over your bills and see where you spend the most. You might find that you're better off with a different type of rewards credit card.
The easiest gas credit card to get approved for is the Discover it® Secured Credit Card. It earns 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants on up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter.
Since this is a secured credit card, you can get approved for it even if you have a low credit score or a limited credit history. A refundable security deposit is required to open the card.
The credit limit for a gas credit card can range from under $500 to well over $10,000. When you get approved for a gas credit card, the card issuer will set a credit limit based on your income, credit history, and overall credit worthiness.
A gas credit card is either a regular credit card that offers extra rewards on gas purchases, or a credit card that's particular to a certain gas station brand and offers deals and benefits.
The best credit cards for gas have a high percentage of cash back on gas purchases, can be used at the gas stations you use most often, and don't charge very many fees.
