Progressive offers homeowners insurance through affiliated third parties. It doesn't underwrite the policies itself. And homeowners won't file a claim through Progressive directly. This leads to inconsistent claims handling. But for those who already have Progressive auto insurance, working with Progressive to get homeowners coverage can result in a generous discount.

Top perks

Opportunities to save on premiums

Customers who bundle home and auto insurance coverage from Progressive save an average of 5% on their car insurance coverage. Other opportunities for saving include:

  • A discount for getting an advance quote, which is available if a homeowner gets a quote at least 10 days before coverage would begin
  • Savings for alarms and other safety devices
  • A discount for a newly purchased home
  • Savings for paying in full
  • A new construction discount
  • A discount for receiving documents via email

Large network of insurance agents

Homeowners who want help customizing their insurance coverage will find the assistance they need from Progressive. The insurer offers a network of more than 35,000 agents that provide personalized guidance. Agents can help customers get home and auto coverage. They can also help with other policies including commercial insurance, boat insurance, RV insurance, and coverage for motorcycles and ATVs.

What could be improved

More consistent claims handling and customer service

Progressive doesn't underwrite policies. And policyholders don't make claims through Progressive. As a result, customers must rely on the third party affiliate to provide good service. Unfortunately, not all third-party companies provide great customer service. For example, ASI Progressive ranked well below average on J.D. Power and Associates Overall Customer Satisfaction rankings.

Alternatives to consider

When looking for homeowners insurance that offers a solid reputation for claims handling: Both Erie Insurance and The Hartford have stronger reputations for customer satisfaction than Progressive. But keep in mind, these insurers don't offer the same vast network of agents. For example, Erie's agent network is less than half the size of Progressive's.

Rates / Pricing

Progressive offers multiple policy options from different affiliates. That means there's a range in prices. Many of the home insurance options offered through Progressive partners are priced competitively.

Discounts available

Policyholders can save on Progressive homeowners insurance in a number of different ways. Discounts for homeowners insurance include:

  • Bundled home and auto: Purchasing both home and auto insurance through Progressive can result in a discount of as much as 5%.
  • Safety and alarm discounts: Burglar alarms, fire alarms, security cameras, and automatic sprinklers all reduce premium costs.
  • Quote in advance: Obtaining an insurance quote at least 10 days before the expiration of a current homeowners insurance policy can result in a premium discount.
  • New purchase: Customers can save when switching from renters to homeowners insurance. They can also save when purchasing a new home, even if it is not newly built.
  • Email documents discount: It's possible to save on premiums by signing up to receive documents via email instead of mail.
  • New home construction: Larger discounts are offered for newer homes.
  • Pay-in-full discount: Policyholders who pay 12 months of premiums up front will save money.

Coverage options

Dwelling

Dwelling coverage pays to rebuild a home or repair a home damaged by a covered peril. Covered perils include:

Temporary living expenses

Homeowners who cannot remain in their homes when repairs are occurring due to a covered loss will be entitled to additional living expense coverage. This could include a hotel stay. It could also cover meal costs in excess of typical grocery bills.

Liability

If someone is injured on the property and a policyholder is held accountable, liability insurance will provide coverage. It's also possible to purchase additional liability coverage for liable and slander.

Personal property

This insurance pays for personal items. If they are damaged due to a covered loss, the insurer pays for repair or replacement. This can include furniture and electronics. Clothing, power equipment, tools, and other belongings are covered as well. Homeowners who have certain expensive items have the option to buy additional riders for more protection. This could include things like jewelry or art.

Application process

Progressive allows homeowners to get an insurance quote online. This requires inputting details such as:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Property address

Customers will also be asked if they already have Progressive auto insurance. And they must provide the date they'd like their policy to start.

Further questions about the home include:

  • Whether it is a primary home
  • Whether the house is in foreclosure or bankruptcy
  • The square footage
  • Whether the property is used for business purposes

Homeowners will also be asked to provide details about some of the home's features and finishes, such as the countertop type.

After completing questions, Progressive provides several different price quotes. Homeowners can choose their preferred option. Once they've selected the type of insurance coverage they want, it's possible to purchase the policy online.

Customer service and ratings

Claims handling is inconsistent because there are different Progressive partners. ASI Progressive, for example, received below average customer service ratings from J.D. Power and Associates.

This homeowners insurance is the best option for: Current Progressive customers

Progressive is best suited for people who:

  • Have Progressive auto insurance
  • Qualify for other discounts, such as a new-home discount
  • Want to work with an in-person insurance agent

But homeowners may want to consider Erie Insurance or The Hartford if top customer service ratings are important to them.
